Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in Champions Trophy (Source:AFP)
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have retired from Test and T20I cricket, and there are now rumours that the BCCI is trying to look beyond the experienced duo in the 50-over format as well. However, now a report from Kushan Sarkar from PTI has revealed that there is no hurry in BCCI circles to decide the future of Kohli and Rohit.
BCCI Not In Hurry To Decide Rohit, Kohli Future
The report from Kushan Sarkar states that the priority currently is the T20 World Cup 2026, and so all the planning and decisions are currenly focussed towards the shortest format. So, to mention that the BCCI does not want Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to play in the ODI format would be nothing more than an assumption.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma last played for India in the Champions Trophy 2025. Both of them performed brilliantly in that tournament, and India lifted the title by beating New Zealand in the final. Virat Kohli scored 218 runs in five innings at an average of 54.50, while Rohit Sharma scored 180 runs, giving rapid starts to the team, which proved to be crucial.
Concerns Over Rohit-Kohli Age-Factor Despite Good ODI Form
Overall, the two stalwarts have been performing consistently in ODI cricket. In the last edition of the ODI World Cup, they played a big role in India's journey to the final, and thus their ODI form has not been a worry. However, according to various reports, there are concerns over their age. Virat Kohli is currently 36 years old, while Rohit is 38, and many believe that India should go with younger players in the next World Cup.
Shubman Gill is likely to take over the captaincy of the ODI format incase Rohit Sharma retires from the 50-over format. Gill has started his Test captaincy journey on a bright note and is currently the vice-captain of the ODI side.
