Regarded as one of the best exponents of T20 bowling, former Pakistan bowler Umar Gul will be in quite a pinch when his home nation takes on Afghanistan in the Super Four stage of the ongoing Asia Cup 2022.

Gul is currently working as a bowling coach for Afghanistan national team after he impressed the board earlier as a consultant during training camp in April.

Speaking to cricketpakistan, Gul opened up about the range of emotions the lanky bowler might feel during the clash on Wednesday. Under Gul, the Afghan pace bowling attack has looked more potent than ever, with Fazalhaq Farooqi spearheading.

“I have spent more than 20 years associated with Pakistan but it is morally and ethically important to fully back the team you are currently associated with,”

However, Gul expressed his desire to coach Pakistan someday, having worked in domestic cricket and Pakistan Super League earlier.

“Obviously you always have a soft spot for the country you played for. If in the future PCB wants to secure my service then I will be ready. But right now I am committed to Afghanistan and I am enjoying my time here,”

T20 Legend

The 39-year-old bagged 85 T20I wickets for Pakistan in just 60 appearances, at a miserly economy of 7.19. He was the highest wicket-taker in the 2007 and 2009 ICC T20 World Cups, respectively.

Under Younis Khan, he claimed 13 wickets in Pakistan's World Cup-winning campaign in 09.
