U19 World Cup | India reach quarterfinals, Australia register big win over Scotland

India Under-19 team registered a convincing victory even after not playing with their two regular players in captain Yash Dhull and vice-captain Shaik Rasheed. The Indian team defeated Ireland by a huge margin of 174 runs to confirm their berth in the quarter-finals of the tournament.

In another game, Australia also defeated minnows Scotland comprehensively to get their net run rate up and stay in the fight to march to the quarterfinals in the group death. Australia have won two of their games, but lost to Sri Lanka which is yet to play West Indies.

Harnoor Angkrish shine in India win

India were dealt a huge blow just ahead of the start of their Group B fixtures against Ireland as six of their players including the captain and the vice-captain returned positive results in the Rapid Antigen Tests for Covid-19. The management was barely able to field the playing xi.

But after all that jitters faded and once the match began the Indian team showed how it is leaps and bounds ahead of its Irish opponents. With the help of Harnoor Singh’s 88, Angkrish Raghuvanshi’s 79 at the top and Rajvardhan Hangargekar’s quickfire 39*, the boys in blue were able to reach 307-5.

Then, while bowling, there was no room given whatsoever for Ireland players to free their arms and the whole team was bowled out for 133 in the 39th over.

Teague Wyllie guides Aussies home

In another match, the Scottish batters did give a better account of themselves as opposed to their showing against West Indies in the previous game. In this game, they reached 236-8 in 50 overs, giving a respectable target of 237 for Australia to chase. Tomas Mackintosh and Charlie Tear hit respective fifties for the Scotts while William Salzmann and Aidan Cahill picked two wickets each for Australia.

The Australian batters knew that they had to chase down the target in as little time as possible to get their net run rate up. Keeping that in mind, the top three Aussie batters showed class with Wyllie going on to register his maiden century in the tournament. He made unbeaten 101 to chase down the target in only the 40th over.

This took Australia’s net run rate ahead but not ahead of Sri Lanka, so in case there is a close encounter between West Indies and the islanders, and the hosts managed to win it, the Aussies might still not qualify for the quarterfinals. So Australia will be hoping that whoever wins that game wins it by a big margin.

Australia’s Shaun Tait presents his candidature for Bangladesh’s fast bowling coach

Former Australia fast bowler Shaun Tait has shown interest in getting the role of Bangladesh’s fast bowling coach after the place fell vacant with incumbent Ottis Gibson departing to Yorkshire, choosing not to renew his contract with Bangladesh Cricket Board. "I'm interested, for sure. Absolutely," said Tait. "They (BCB) have got some time to think about who they are going to go with. It'll be a great job," he was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz. Tait, who also worked as a bowling consultant with Afghanistan during the recently concluded T20 World Cup in 2021, is currently working with Chattogram Challengers as their pace bowling coach for the Bangladesh Premier League which will start from Friday, January 21 in Dhaka. Talking about his interest in the role, Tait said, "In general, the stage Bangladesh cricket are in, there are so many good young players. They could become great players. Shoriful is an aggressive left-arm bowler. He is gonna be extremely important to this team. He has played enough cricket now to know what he is doing. So, I'm looking forward to working with him.” "Bangladesh have got quite a decent depth of young players, even fast bowlers. The next 5-6-7 years are gonna be exciting for cricket here in Bangladesh," added the 38-year-old. In his playing days, Tait, who represented Australia in 59 internationals across all three formats and picked up 95 wickets, was considered one of the fastest bowlers to have ever played the game.

SA vs IND series not part of CWC ODI Super League, here is why

Few people might have been shocked when commentators on TV said during the first ODI between hosts South Africa and India at Boland Park in Paarl that the series is not part of the Cricket World Cup Super League. The CWC Super League started in 2019 is the qualification system for the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 to be hosted in India. The reason as to why this three-match series is not part of the Super League is because according to ICC rules, each of the 13 teams part of the league, which includes the Netherlands as the only non-Test-playing member, have to play only eight series of three-match each against eight other teams. "In some cases, they may play four or five matches in a series, but only three pre-decided matches will count for the Super League points," says the ICC. And thus, this series between South Africa and India is a pre-decided one. The Super League series between the two teams was supposed to be played in March 2020, however, due to Covid-19, it was postponed. It will now be played in 2022. According to the rule of the Super League, "Each team plays three ODIs against eight other teams. Four of these are home series and four are away series. This means each team plays a total of 24 ODIs." Ten points are added for each win and five for a tie/no result/abandoned match. The Indian team has so far played nine of its mandatory 24 games, three each against Australia (home), England (home) and Sri Lanka (away). It will next play South Africa (home), West Indies (home), Afghanistan (home), Zimbabwe and New Zealand (both away). South Africa has so far played 10 games, three each against Ireland and Sri Lanka away from home, three against Pakistan (home) and one against the Netherlands which was washed out. The other two matches of its series against the Netherlands and an entire series against England at home has been postponed. Apart from those two series, it is supposed to play against Australia (away), Bangladesh (home) and against India (away). At the end, when each team has played 24 games each, "The bottom five teams will play a qualifying tournament, which will also feature the best teams from the lower rungs of competition," says ICC. As of now, England are at the top of the league having played 15 games and won nine of them, with one match washed out. They have 95 points. At the second spot is Bangladesh with 80 points from 12 games. The Netherlands with 25 points from four games is at the bottom. South Africa are in ninth place with 39 points from 10 games (one point deducted for slow over-rate). Though it doesn't matter for India as it is already qualified for the World Cup by the virtue of being hosts, the men in blue sit at the seventh spot with 49 points from nine games (one point deducted for slow over-rate).
