South Zone won the Deodhar Trophy for a record ninth time when they beat East Zone in the 2023 final in Pondicherry on Thursday.

Batting first, South Zone piled up 328 for eight after opener Rohan Kunnummal scored a sensational century - a 75-ball 107 with four sixes and 11 fours. Chasing 329 to win, East Zone were bowled out for 283 in 46.1 overs.

South Zone won all of their league matches in the tournament, and this is their second successive title this domestic season, after winning the Duleep Trophy last month.

Coming to the prize money, South Zone received Rs 40 lakh for winning the trophy while East Zone took home Rs 20 lakh.

The Deodhar Trophy is a prestigious limited-overs tournament, named after Prof. D. B. Deodhar, a notable cricket administrator and former player. Since its inception in 1973-74, the Deodhar Trophy has been an important tournament in India's domestic cricket calendar. The other important domestic tournaments are the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and the Ranji Trophy.

Earlier this year, the BCCI hiked the prize money for all domestic tournaments. Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy champions will be receiving a cheque of Rs 80 lakh and the losing team will get 40 lakh. Ranji trophy winners will get Rs 5 crores (from 2 crore), while winners of Vijay Hazare Trophy will now be getting a cheque of Rs 1 crore.
