Melbourne Renegades have announced the signing of Essex leg-spinner Matthew Critchley as replacement player for the remainder of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2022-23.

Critchley becomes the second player after Fawad Ahmed to find a place in the squad after the departure of Mujeeb Ul Rahman and Akeal Hosein, who played nine matches before leaving for other commitments.

Critchley had a phenomenal T20 Blast season with Essex in 2022, picking up 15 wickets and scoring 248 runs in 10 matches. The Preston-born also played for the Welsh Fire Men's in the Hundred 2022.

Overall, he has featured in 80 First-Class, 43 List-A and93 T20s since 2015.

Renegades GM James Rosengarten welcomed their new signee, who they had been scouting for a while.

Here's what Rosengarten stated

"We've had our eye on Matt for some time given his hard-hitting and spin-bowling combination. We've got a strong connection with Essex so we know a lot about his game and what he can bring to the Renegades as a bowler, batter, fielder and teammate,"

The 26-year-old was recently picked in England's reserve One-Day International squad for the series against Sri Lanka next month.

Renegades, who will be without Shaun Marsh and Nic Maddinson, take on the Adelaide Strikers in their next match on Tuesday.
