  • The Hundred 2022 Michael Hogan Earns A Wildcard Pick In His Final Professional Year

The Hundred 2022: Michael Hogan earns a wildcard pick in his final professional year

The second edition of the Hundred is just around the corner, with all eight franchises brainstorming over the past couple of weeks.

After the completion of the initial draft in April, the teams were allowed to make two more picks; a Vitality Wildcard player and an Overseas Wildcard player.

According to ESPN Cricinfo, the Southern Brave have signed Australian pacer Michael Hogan.

The 41-year-old had earlier announced that this year would be his last one as a professional cricketer. However, he has made a wildcard entry into the Braves' squad following his stellar performance in the ongoing Vitality T20 Blast season.

To note, Michael Hogan had 20 scalps to his name in 11 T20 Blast outings this season. James Fuller has also been brought on board as a partial replacement for Quinton de Kock, who will miss the opening fixture. Fuller will replace Finn Allen, as the Kiwi batter is scheduled for International duty.

On the other hand, the Lancashire all-rounder Richard Gleeson has been signed by Manchester Originals.

The 34-year-old has had a breakthrough T20 Blast season this year, which has earned him a call-up to the England squad for the Indian T20I series. The Originals used their right-to-match card to bring the all-rounder back, as he was withdrawn from the squad last year owing to an injury.

Among other notable names, Jack Haynes and Ben Raine have been signed by Oval Invincibles and Northern Superchargers, respectively.

The Hundred 2022 will be a month-long tournament commencing on August 3. A total of 58 matches will be conducted across both men's and women's events, with the finals being played at the Lord's.

Happy Birthday MS Dhoni | Top Five knocks in his glittering career

The date 7th of July holds a special place for cricket fanatics as it marks the birth anniversary of talismanic Indian wicket-keeper batsman and leader, MS Dhoni. In this article, we take a look at some of the finest innings in his international career. 148 vs Pakistan, Visakhapatnam 2005 Having already won the series opener in Kochi, the then Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly promoted Dhoni to No.3 after Sachin Tendulkar was dismissed in the fourth over. After registering scores of 0, 12, 7* and 3 in his first four international outings, Dhoni announced himself on the biggest stage with a stroke-filled 148 off 123 balls. This masterstroke of a decision was a key factor in this outstanding innings by the young wicket-keeper batter. 183* vs Sri Lanka, Jaipur 2005 Dhoni came in at No.3 after Sachin Tendulkar was dismissed in the first over itself. He was sent in to keep the required run-rate within India's reach due to his big-hitting abilities. He hit 15 fours and 10 sixes in a brutal display of ball striking. The Ranchi-born went past Adam Gilchrist's 172 in the process, registering the highest score for a wicket-keeper batter in one-day cricket. Dhoni's match-winning innings of 183* against Sri Lanka broke all kinds of records. His tally of 10 sixes was a record for an Indian batsman in ODIs until Rohit Sharma bettered it during his double century against Australia in Bangalore in 2013. 91* vs Sri Lanka, Mumbai 2011 The iconic "Dhoni finishes off in style, a magnificent strike into the crowd, India lift the World Cup after 28 years" still rings fresh in the ears of each Indian. 11 years ago, India lifted the World Cup. Sri Lanka posted 274, thanks to Mahela Jayawardena's scintillating ton. India lost both their openers Virender Sehwag (0 off 2) and Tendulkar (18 off 14) early against Malinga. After that, it was MS Dhoni (91*) who decided to join Gambhir (97) in the middle after Kohli's (35 off 49) wicket. Notably, it was Yuvraj Singh (Best Player of the 2011 WC), who had been batting up to that point at the no. 5 position in that tournament, but MSD decided to go a number up in the final. 224 vs Australia, Chennai 2013 Dhoni scored his first double ton in Test cricket against Australia back when India hosted the Michael Clarke-led side in 2013. India was in a tricky situation after Australia posted 380 in the first innings. MS gathered a 128 runs partnership with Virat Kohli for the fifth and later partnered 140 runs with Bhuvneshwar Kumar for the ninth wicket. 'Captain Cool' smashed 24 boundaries and six maximums in his extraordinary knock of 224 runs. 45* vs Sri Lanka, Trinidad 2013 Another final, another crisis situation, another thrilling finish with an authoritative six – Dhoni's last-over blitz in the Celkon Cup final against Sri Lanka in 2013 will go down as an all-time classic. Having missed the previous three games due to injury, Dhoni walked in to join a well-set Rohit Sharma, with India in a strong position to chase a target of 202. However, a dramatic collapse saw them stumble from 139/3 to 182/9, with Dhoni stranded at one end. With 17 needed off the last two overs, Ishant survived the penultimate one from Angelo Mathews before Dhoni took Shaminda Eranga for three boundaries in the final over.

Geoffrey Boycott offers advice for struggling Virat Kohli

Marquee Indian batter Virat Kohli managed scores of 11 and 20 against England in the recently concluded rescheduled Test match at Edgbaston. His dreadful run with the bat continues to haunt India. Despite looking good during the second innings of the decisive Test match, he dragged the ball onto the stumps and got castled by Matthew Potts. Not only has Kohli's Test average now dropped to 49.53, the cricketer has not registered a single international century in any format since November 2019. Moreover, the former Indian captain recently fell out of the top 10 rankings for Test batsmen for the first time in six years. Legendary England cricketer Geoffrey Boycott believes that Kohli is getting bogged down by his own technique. The cricketer-turned-commentator stated that the Indian batter should put a price on his wicket and set small targets instead of achieving big scores in the middle. While speaking with Mid-Day, Boycott said: "Kohli dragged the ball onto the stumps since he was in two minds. He should have come forward, but he could not decide how to handle it. He has to clear his mind in this regard. He is not looking fluent and should realise that when someone is not in good touch, he should be extra cautious. He has to reduce the number of mistakes, must concentrate more and value his wicket". "The moment he starts doing that [concentrating], the mistakes will be minimised. He should not think about big scores. Let the targets be small, take more singles and get acclimatised. Runs will give him confidence which is essential at the moment. It's a mental game and it's a pity that such a big player is not among the runs", added Boycott. Virat Kohli, the road ahead The charismatic batter will now be seen donning India's jersey in the white-ball series in England. With T20 World Cup simply around the corner, the cricketer will be desperately looking to regain his lost glory with the bat. The first of the three T20Is will be played at Southampton's Rose Bowl on July 7. The action is slated to commence from 10:30 PM IST onwards.
