England Test captain Ben Stokes has expressed his disappointment at the racial abuse faced by a section of Indian fans during the recent Test match at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground.
With the game reaching its boiling point on the fourth afternoon, several Indian fans, who were present at the stadium, took to their social media accounts to post allegations of the racial slurs that they were subjected to by a group of English fans.
Stokes, who led his side to a series-levelling win at Edgbaston, said that he is disappointed to hear the reports of racist abuse, stating that there is no place for it in the game.
The champion cricketer is hopeful that the fans of both teams will create a party atmosphere during the six white-ball matches, which will commence with a T20I at the Rose Bowl in Southampton on Thursday, July 07.
Stokes said: "Amazing week on the pitch but really disappointed to hear reports of racist abuse at Edgbaston. Absolutely no place for it in the game. Hope all the fans at the white-ball series have a brilliant time and create a party atmosphere. That's what cricket's about.”
Meanwhile, England successfully staged their redemption against India earlier this week as they smashed the Jasprit Bumrah-led unit to record their highest-ever fourth innings run-chase of 378.
And, they did it with ruthless disdain, with Joe Root smashing his 28th Test ton and Jonny Bairstow stroking his 2nd hundred of the game in what was a sensational display of batsmanship.
The victory also gave England their 4th successive win this summer, a stark difference from the past 15 months where they had managed just 1 win out of 17.
The focus will now shift to the T20Is and the home side will look to clinch their first bilateral rubber in the format against India since 2014.
