  • The Hundred 2022 Dewald Brevis Tristan Stubbs Included In Wildcard Draft

The Hundred 2022 | Dewald Brevis, Tristan Stubbs included in 'wildcard' draft

In the latest development, young South African batters Dewald Brevis and Tristan Stubbs have shown their interest in becoming overseas players in the upcoming second season of The Hundred.

The promising duo, who made their Indian Premier League debut for the five-time champions Mumbai Indians in the recently-concluded season, are among the 257 cricketers who have thrown their hat in the ring for the 'wildcard' draft for overseas players' slots in The Hundred.

The draft, which is scheduled to take place on Thursday, June 09, will see each of the eight franchises pick a fourth overseas player to the squad they'd picked during the original draft held in April.

Brevis, 19, turned heads with his swashbuckling and fearless display at the recent ICC Under-19 World Cup in the Caribbean Islands.

Although South Africa failed to progress to the knockouts, Brevis, nicknamed 'Baby AB', managed to capture the imagination of the cricketing world as he broke Shikhar Dhawan's record for most runs in a single edition of the tournament.

He was later picked by the Mumbai Indians for a staggering sum of INR 3 Crore despite registering himself at a base price of Rs 20 Lakh.

Brevis lived up to the expectations as he smashed 161 runs in seven outings at a blistering strike rate of 142.47. He, along with Tilak Varma and Tim David were the standouts for Mumbai in what was a disastrous season for the former champions.

Stubbs, on the other hand, was one of the standouts in CSA's T20 Challenge, and while he could manage just 2 runs in as many outings for MI, he has been picked in South Africa's squad for the upcoming 5-match T20I series against India, starting later this week.

The 'wildcard' overseas players will each be paid £50,000. However, each team will still be allowed to slot in just three overseas players in their starting XI.

In addition to Brevis and Stubbs, the majority of players who went unsold in the main draft have also put their name forward for the 'wildcard' draft.

The list includes players like David Warner, Shabab Khan, Babar Azam, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman. Meanwhile, players like Evin Lewis, Marnus Labuschagne, Shimron Hetmyer, and Imran Tahir - who weren't a part of the initial draft - are also a part of the 'wildcard' draft.

Nobody gives me a chance to explain my plan regarding my T20s: Tamim Iqbal

Talismanic Bangladesh left-handed opener Tamim Iqbal has taken a jibe at the BCB management and selection committee for not communicating with him regarding his T20I future. Iqbal, who pulled out of last year's T20 World Cup, took a six-month break from the shortest format back in January, and it is yet not clear whether he will be available for this year's marquee T20 event in Australia. "Nobody gives me a chance to explain my plan regarding my T20s. So either you [media] say it, or someone else tells it [regarding my T20's future] and let it move like this because I am not given any chance [by the board] to tell anything,'' Tamim told reporters, as quoted by Cricbuzz. ''I played for so long at least I deserve it, what I feel or think they should hear it from me. But either you [media] give some kind of notion or someone (board) else tells something. And as they say something I don't have anything to say,'' he added. His comments directly contrast what BCB's cricket operation chairman Jamal Yunus' told the media recently. Yunus suggested that the BCB has approached Tamim to speak to him about his T20 future and convince the batsman to make a return to the format. "Tamim Iqbal is one of the senior players on our side and he understands his position better than anyone else. You all know we had a meeting with him regarding this. He had told you [media] exclusively about his plan and now what we have to say. After completing the six months, he will officially tell you about his decision and you will know through him about his plan and I can't say anything about it," Jalal told the media recently. "We have tried during the last three to four months [to make a return] and he said that he had taken the decision considering his career and future and we pay full respect to that," he added. Recently, batting coach Jamie Siddons reckoned that Tamim could be an excellent option at No.4, something that the southpaw shrugged off vehemently. "What do you think? I should bat at number four or I should open?'' Tamim asked. ''About me batting four, I don't see any reason why should I bat at number four. I have been opening for 17 years and I have been doing quite well. So there is no chance (me batting at four),'' he signed off. Tamim has represented Bangladesh in 78 T20s, scoring 1500 runs at an average of 24.08 and a strike rate of 117. He last featured in the format back in 2020.

Nadine de Klerk aiming for a permanent place in South Africa Women's team

South Africa's young all-rounder Nadine de Klerk endured a major setback earlier this year when she failed to make it to the main squad for the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2022. Nadine was a part of the Proteas squad as a reserve player alongside spinner Raisibe Ntozakhe and batter Andrie Steyn. In five years of international cricket so far, the all-rounder has represented South Africa Women in 16 One Day Internationals and 24 T20 Internationals, scoring 129 and 265 runs, respectively. She also has 15 ODI and 20 T20I wickets to her name. However, Nadine is yet to confirm a permanent place in the team, and she is often used as a substitute. The 22-year-old was gutted to miss the Women's World Cup games. However, she has now decided to divert her attention toward the coming leagues. "It's always hard facing those types of disappointments but at the end of the day, I have a massive passion for cricket, and I always want to work hard and become the best player I possibly can," De Klerk was quoted by Cricket South Africa's official website. "It was a setback, but you always just want to get back up and work harder. I am on my journey towards that and just really want to become the best cricketer I possibly can and maneuver my way back into the playing 11 and in the squad," she added. As De Klerk was a part of the Proteas World Cup squad as a reserve player, she watched all the games from the dugout. It was a new experience for the all-rounder to warm the bench throughout the tournament, as she labelled it as mentally challenging. Notably, South Africa was absolutely sensational during the league round as they defeated some of the strong teams, including England, India, and New Zealand. The team reached the playoffs by winning five of their eight league games. However, their campaign ended following a 137-run loss against England Women in the second semi-final. "It was a bit different. I have never experienced something like that before, but the girls played really great cricket and it was exciting just to be there as well, to watch them play was something really special; the way they took on some of the best in the world,” she said. "You obviously have your mental challenges; I was just trying to tell myself to stay up and about and always bring energy to the team, and try and motivate and cheer them on wherever I can. It was lovely to be there and support the girls," the all-rounder concluded. Further, the 22-year-old revealed her future goals. Nadine is hoping to get some good opportunities to showcase her talent to the selectors and file a strong case for the upcoming 2022 Commonwealth Games and ICC Women's T20 Cricket World Cup.
