Ranji Trophy 2022 | Quarter-Finals - Day 01 Round-Up

The much-awaited knockout stages of the 2021/22 season of the Ranji Trophy got underway today in Bengaluru and Alur.

Here's what happened in each of the four Quarterfinal fixtures -

Bengal v Jharkhand, 1st Quarterfinal

Last season's runners-up Bengal have taken a pole position in their quarterfinal fixture against Jharkhand courtesy of a sensational batting performance on the first day against Jharkhand.

Having been put into bat, Bengal openers ensured that the decision to bowl first by Jharkhand backfired substantially as skipper Abhimanyu Easwaran (65 off 124) and Abhishek Raman (41 off 72) added runs at a rapid rate.

Raman retired after pulling his hamstring while Easwaran was eventually dismissed by Sushant Mishra. However, it didn't have any effect on the game as Sudip Kumar Gharami (106* off 204), and Anustup Majumdar (85*off 139) went on to add 178 unbeaten runs for the second wicket to end the day at 310/1 in 89 overs.

Scores- Bengal 310/1 in 89 overs (Sudip Kumar Gharami 106*, Anustup Majumdar 85*; Sushant Mishra 1-75)

Mumbai v Uttarakhand, 2nd Quarterfinal

Former heavyweights Mumbai rode on an unbeaten century from debutant Suved Parkar (104* off 218) and Sarfaraz Khan's rapid 104-ball 69* to end the proceedings at 304/3 in 86 against Uttarakhand.

Batting first, Mumbai got off to a brisk start thanks to a flurry of boundaries from the opening duo of Prithvi Shaw (21 off 20) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (35 off 45).

Shaw and Jaiswal were eventually dismissed by Deepak Dhapola (3-53 in 18) in the 7th and 15th over, respectively, reducing Mumbai to 64-2.

However, Armaan Jaffer went on to score a half-century (60 off 133) and, along with debutant centurion Parkar, added 112 runs for the third wicket.

Once again, it was Dhapola who proved to be the partnership-breaker as he dismissed Jaffer for 60.

But, Parkar and Sarfaraz ensured that Mumbai didn't lose any more wickets and finished the day at a strong position of 304/3.

Scores- Mumbai 304/3 in 86 overs (Suved Parkar 104*, Sarfaraz Khan 69*, Armaan Jaffer 60; Deepak Dhapola 3-53)

Karnataka v Uttar Pradesh, 3rd Quarterfinal

Brilliant displays from pacer Shivam Mavi (3-40 in 11) and left-arm orthodox Saurabh Kumar (4-67 in 29) have helped Uttar Pradesh take a commanding position at Stumps on Day 1 as they reduced Karnataka to 213-7 in Alur.

Batting first, Karnataka got off to a decent start as Ravikumar Samarth (57 off 81), and Mayank Agarwal (10 off 41) added 57 runs in 13 overs.

However, Mavi's introduction in the attack proved to be a turning point as the rookie pacer dismissed both Agarwal and Karun Nair, while Saurabh Kumar took out Samarth to leave Karnataka reeling at 97/3.

Krishnamurthy Siddharth (37 off 84) and skipper Manish Pandey (27 off 70) somewhat revived the innings with a 63-run-stand before Mavi and Saurabh ran through their middle and lower order as Karnataka finished the day at 213/7.

Scores- Karnataka 213/7 in 72 overs (R Samarth 57; Saurabh Kumar 4-67, Shivam Mavi 3-40)

Punjab v Madhya Pradesh, 4th Quarterfinal

Madhya Pradesh have assumed a strong position in their quarterfinal fixture against Punjab thanks to a sensational bowling performance led by the duo of Puneet Datey (3-48 in 14) and Anubhav Agarwal (3-36 in 13.3).

Datey was the pick of the bowlers as he got the ball to move both ways, and as a result, he managed to knock over Punjab's top-3, including Shubman Gill (9 off 9).

Agarwal and the rest of the bowlers backed it up by running past Punjab's middle, lower middle and tailenders. For Punjab, three batters - Abhishek Sharma 47, Anmolpreet Singh 47, Sanvir Singh 41 - got into 40s but failed to convert it into big scores.

Punjab were eventually bowled out for 219 in the 72nd over, and MP finished the day at 5/0 after 1 over.

Scores- Punjab 219 all-out in 71.3 overs (Abhishek Sharma 47, Anmolpreet Singh 47, Sanvir Singh 41; Puneet Datey 3-48, Anubhav Agarwal 3-36, Saransh Jain 2/45) lead Madhya Pradesh 5/0 by 214 runs.

Nobody gives me a chance to explain my plan regarding my T20s: Tamim Iqbal

Talismanic Bangladesh left-handed opener Tamim Iqbal has taken a jibe at the BCB management and selection committee for not communicating with him regarding his T20I future. Iqbal, who pulled out of last year's T20 World Cup, took a six-month break from the shortest format back in January, and it is yet not clear whether he will be available for this year's marquee T20 event in Australia. "Nobody gives me a chance to explain my plan regarding my T20s. So either you [media] say it, or someone else tells it [regarding my T20's future] and let it move like this because I am not given any chance [by the board] to tell anything,'' Tamim told reporters, as quoted by Cricbuzz. ''I played for so long at least I deserve it, what I feel or think they should hear it from me. But either you [media] give some kind of notion or someone (board) else tells something. And as they say something I don't have anything to say,'' he added. His comments directly contrast what BCB's cricket operation chairman Jamal Yunus' told the media recently. Yunus suggested that the BCB has approached Tamim to speak to him about his T20 future and convince the batsman to make a return to the format. "Tamim Iqbal is one of the senior players on our side and he understands his position better than anyone else. You all know we had a meeting with him regarding this. He had told you [media] exclusively about his plan and now what we have to say. After completing the six months, he will officially tell you about his decision and you will know through him about his plan and I can't say anything about it," Jalal told the media recently. "We have tried during the last three to four months [to make a return] and he said that he had taken the decision considering his career and future and we pay full respect to that," he added. Recently, batting coach Jamie Siddons reckoned that Tamim could be an excellent option at No.4, something that the southpaw shrugged off vehemently. "What do you think? I should bat at number four or I should open?'' Tamim asked. ''About me batting four, I don't see any reason why should I bat at number four. I have been opening for 17 years and I have been doing quite well. So there is no chance (me batting at four),'' he signed off. Tamim has represented Bangladesh in 78 T20s, scoring 1500 runs at an average of 24.08 and a strike rate of 117. He last featured in the format back in 2020.

Nadine de Klerk aiming for a permanent place in South Africa Women's team

South Africa's young all-rounder Nadine de Klerk endured a major setback earlier this year when she failed to make it to the main squad for the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2022. Nadine was a part of the Proteas squad as a reserve player alongside spinner Raisibe Ntozakhe and batter Andrie Steyn. In five years of international cricket so far, the all-rounder has represented South Africa Women in 16 One Day Internationals and 24 T20 Internationals, scoring 129 and 265 runs, respectively. She also has 15 ODI and 20 T20I wickets to her name. However, Nadine is yet to confirm a permanent place in the team, and she is often used as a substitute. The 22-year-old was gutted to miss the Women's World Cup games. However, she has now decided to divert her attention toward the coming leagues. "It's always hard facing those types of disappointments but at the end of the day, I have a massive passion for cricket, and I always want to work hard and become the best player I possibly can," De Klerk was quoted by Cricket South Africa's official website. "It was a setback, but you always just want to get back up and work harder. I am on my journey towards that and just really want to become the best cricketer I possibly can and maneuver my way back into the playing 11 and in the squad," she added. As De Klerk was a part of the Proteas World Cup squad as a reserve player, she watched all the games from the dugout. It was a new experience for the all-rounder to warm the bench throughout the tournament, as she labelled it as mentally challenging. Notably, South Africa was absolutely sensational during the league round as they defeated some of the strong teams, including England, India, and New Zealand. The team reached the playoffs by winning five of their eight league games. However, their campaign ended following a 137-run loss against England Women in the second semi-final. "It was a bit different. I have never experienced something like that before, but the girls played really great cricket and it was exciting just to be there as well, to watch them play was something really special; the way they took on some of the best in the world,” she said. "You obviously have your mental challenges; I was just trying to tell myself to stay up and about and always bring energy to the team, and try and motivate and cheer them on wherever I can. It was lovely to be there and support the girls," the all-rounder concluded. Further, the 22-year-old revealed her future goals. Nadine is hoping to get some good opportunities to showcase her talent to the selectors and file a strong case for the upcoming 2022 Commonwealth Games and ICC Women's T20 Cricket World Cup.
