Manchester Originals Women slumped to a 43-run defeat at Manchester’s Old Trafford, courtesy of Trent Rockets’ Australian import Alana King.

The all-rounder snared four wickets with the ball, including a hat-trick in the middle overs to derail the Originals run-chase.

Speaking with Sky Cricket after the match, the 26-year-old paid tribute to the late Shane Warne. Warne, who himself was a spin wizard, passed away earlier this year due to a heart attack.

Notably, the Australian spin legend had bowled the ‘ball of the century’ at the same venue in the 1993 Ashes to dismiss Mike Gatting. Referring to her own performance and Warne’s history with Old Trafford, King said:

“I hope he’s looking down and pretty proud that I’ve spun a few today. Just a special place Old Trafford.”

Notably, King’s hat-trick also marked the first of such effort in The Hundred Women’s competition. Earlier this month, she was part of the Australian women’s battalion that won the gold medal against India at the Commonwealth Games 2022.

Making her debut in The Hundred, the right-arm spinner showed no first-game jitters as she crashed the hosts party with figures of 4-15 off her 20 deliveries.

She received much assistance from fellow bowlers Kathryn Bryce and Sarah Glenn who claimed two wickets each in the decisive innings to shoot out the Originals for just 76.

Earlier in the day, the Trent Rockets had piled up 119-5 off their 100 balls on the back of Abigail Freeborn’s 45*. Their 43-run win now puts them at the top of the Women’s points table, courtesy of their high net run-rate.
