The Everlasting woes of the Indian top order against left-arm pacers

After a convincing performance in the first match, India went off-track in the second ODI. While chasing a target of 247 runs, the Indian batting lineup was bundled out for 146 runs.

Much like the third T20I, the Indian top order was done by the English left-arm duo of Reece Topley and David Willey.

In this article, we try and find out why the top-Indian batters struggle against the left-armers.

  • The way India have projected their players in the recent series, the top order of the team, will have Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, and Suryakumar Yadav as the top order for the gala event.

Let us look at the records of these four against left-arm bowling

  • BPD- Balls Per Dismissal

KL Rahul has the best overall record against left-arm pacers among the Indian top-order batters. But his form has also dipped against them in the last two years.

What is the problem?

  • As a batter, a left-arm pacer bowling from over the wicket is indeed a difficult angle to manage.

  • The biggest problem the Indian top order faces is the ball coming in from that angle.

And the primary concern is the fact that not only one batter but the whole top order finds it challenging to manage the incoming ball.

With the World Cup approaching, the team management must take measures to handle this technical glitch as it will be on the opposition’s radar.

WI vs BAN: 'Can't make any excuses' - WI bowling coach Roddy Estwick wants concrete plans against spin bowling

West Indies have been completely bamboozled by the Bangladesh spin bowling attack in the ongoing ODI series. The visitors have claimed an unassailable 2-0 series lead after recording a thumping nine-wicket victory on Wednesday. Interestingly, this was also Bangladesh's biggest ODI victory away from home. The hosts were bundled out for a score of less than 150 runs for the second game running. West Indies were bowled out for just 108 runs in the second ODI, with spinners claiming as many as eight wickets. West Indies bowling coach Roddy Estwick has urged his side not to lose their confidence. However, he emphasised on coming up with concrete plans against spin bowling, with an eye on the 50-over World Cup that is less than 15-months away. "Just a week ago we were winning the Test and T20I series but we are 2-0 in the ODI series are obviously very disappointed but you have to try to lift the group. The key is to not allow the confidence to drain out of the group," Estwick told EspnCricinfo. We are still planning for 2023. We know that teams will bowl spin against us. We have to get better at rotating the strike," he added. Estwick has also been left surprised by Bangladesh straying from their regular plan. The visitors won the toss on both occasions, asking the West Indies to put the runs on the board instead of opting to set a target themselves. "Bangladesh put us in both times they won the toss. Normally, Bangladesh likes to set a score to put you under pressure. They have gone away from that due to the surface," Estwick concluded. West Indies will be looking to avoid a clean-sweep as the two sides face each other in the final ODI on Saturday, 16th July. It would also mark the end of a long tour, including match-ups in all three formats. Read More: Tamim Iqbal on ODI series victory against West Indies
