T20 Blast 2022: Sussex sign Tom Alsop for a permanent two-year deal

In the latest developments, the Sussex County Cricket Club has signed left-handed batsman Tom Alsop permanently until at least 2025.

Alsop, 26, was initially picked by Sussex on a season-long loan from Hampshire at the start of the 2022 summer.

However, his impressive performances in both the County Championship and the ongoing Vitality T20 Blast have prompted the think-tank to sign him permanently.

Alsop has scored 313 runs in 10 innings in the Division 02 County Championship at an average of 31.30. With the help of a couple of half-centuries and a hundred against Middlesex.

He backed it up with a match-winning 30-ball 65* against defending champions Kent to help Sussex win their first fixture in the T20 Blast.

Speaking on his permanent signing, Alsop expressed his delight and thanked the Sussex management for making him feel at home in such a short period.

He also thanked Hampshire for the continuous support.

"To sign permanently for Sussex is great news. I've thoroughly enjoyed my time with Sussex, and I'm glad that I have made a decent start to the season in both formats of the game," said Alsop in an official statement released by Sussex.

"I'd like to thank Hampshire, and I'd like to say a massive thank you to the coaching staff at Sussex for believing in me and to everybody else who has made me feel at home so quickly," he added.

Meanwhile, Sussex head coach Ian Salisbury said:

"Tom has fitted in brilliantly, so I aimed to get the best version of Tom Alsop, and I believe we are already starting to see that now,"

"If you make somebody feel valued and believe in them, then I believe you will see the best version of that person, and the best version of Tom Alsop is a fantastic cricketer,"

"We have a lot of young cricketers in the team, and Tom is someone who, in his mid-twenties, gives us some added experience. I am sure Tom will be a huge success in years to come."

Alsop has thus far featured in 45 T20s, scoring 896 runs at an average of 24.21 and a strike rate of 118.36 with 4 50+ scores.

The two-year permanent deal will come into effect from November 2022, when his current loan deal expires.

With three wins in 6 fixtures, Sussex Sharks are currently at the 3rd spot in the points table, and they will next face Surrey at the Kia Oval on Wednesday, June 08.

Sam Curran excited about his return to England's red-ball team

England's bowling all-rounder Sam Curran has been an exceptional player for the national team since making his debut in 2018. After performing well in the international circuit, he replicated the same in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). However, Curran was ruled out of the 2021 edition of the T20 World Cup due to a lower back injury. He then missed the entire IPL 2022 while still in recovery mode. The southpaw last featured for England in August 2021 against India. However, after undergoing a stiff rehabilitation program with Surrey medical team, Curran returned to play the 2022 edition of the County Championship Division One. He amassed 328 runs in four matches but went wicketless. His performances in the ongoing T20 Blast 2022 has been terrific, wherein he is the best all-round performer for Surrey with 185 runs and 10 wickets in five appearances. With these performances, he was named in the upcoming three-match ODI series against the Netherlands this month. Curran shared his thoughts on England's impressive win in the 1st Test against New Zealand at Lord's. He reckoned that watching the players return to their top form was exciting and termed it as a fantastic win. "It was massively exciting to watch them, a fantastic win and a game that had everything," he told the PA news agency. The all-rounder added that Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum are positive with their approach, which aligns with the people's expectations. "Stokesy and the new head coach Brendon McCullum are two positive guys and that's how most people like to see their cricket played." The 24-year-old cricketer hopes that he will make a comeback in the group and help the English team to have a successful summer. "There will be no backward steps under Ben and that's the way I like to play too. Hopefully, it's the start of a successful Test summer for the guys and, hopefully, I'll be back around the group." He looks forward to working under head coach McCullum in the red-ball format. "I've never worked with Brendon but I've met him a couple of times, he seems a really good guy and I'm really looking forward to it." In the end, Curran concluded that he is excited about the Netherlands trip, where he would be making a comeback after a hiatus of 10 months.
