Supreme Court adjourns hearing on BCCI’s constitution amendment plea

BCCI’s attempts to amend its constitution with respect to the tenure of its officials suffered a further setback as the Supreme Court adjourned the hearing of the board’s plea regarding the matter today.

The plea was pending for two years, so the bench comprising Chief Justice NV Ramana and Justices Krishna Murari and Hima Kohli had earlier agreed to list it for an immediate hearing.

However, today, the bench postponed the hearing till tomorrow after BCCI’s advocate Mr Harish Salve requested the same.

The advocate representing the Bihar Cricket Association countered BCCI’s request by stating that the board officials, including the president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah, have been enjoying their extended tenure.

However, the bench dismissed his appeal by saying, “Tomorrow! One day nothing will happen. What is the hurry?”

As per the current BCCI constitution, approved by the Supreme Court, both Ganguly and Shah will have to step down from their respective roles for a mandatory cooling-off period of three years as they have already served six years as office bearers for the organisation.

The BCCI had filed a petition to remove this cooling-off clause two years ago. However, the hearing of the matter has been significantly delayed due to several reasons, including the COVID-19 outbreak in the country.
