  • County Division Two 2022 Mid V Sus Cheteshwar Pujaras Ton Puts Sussex In The Driving Seat

County Division Two 2022 | MID v SUS | Cheteshwar Pujara’s ton puts Sussex in the driving seat

After being sent to bat, Sussex had a mixed day as they concluded Day 1 at 328 for 4 at Lords. Middlesex bowlers had a tiresome day as Cheteshwar Pujara (115* of 182) and Tom Alsop (135 of 277) scored centuries on a good track.

This is Pujara’s 5th century of the county season, on the back of two double-centuries and two hundreds. Alsop has also been in fine touch as he managed to add another century to his tally after his blistering ton against Leicestershire.

Pujara and Alsop stitched together a mammoth 219 run partnership for the third wicket. Pujara who was named as the interim captain for this crucial match due to the injury of the regular skipper Tom Haines, played a captain's knock after Sussex lost wickets of both the openers within 35 overs.

The scoreboard was dawdling and the game was moving in a prosaic manner. Pujara played some really good shots and made up for lost time. He also managed to smash the only maximum of the match, clearly showing intent of the Indian batter.

Middlesex captain Tim Murtagh expected the ball to do more on the greenish pitch, but the home side couldn’t extract much help from the surface. After the initial phase, the pitch eased out and played nicely for the batters.

The bowling side can be considerably happy as they managed to close the day on a positive note. Tom Helm, who was the pick of the bowlers ended the day with 3 for 63, got two wickets in the 92nd over.

Alsop’s wicket would have given the side something to cheer about on their way back to the dressing room. Apart from Helm, Murtagh was the only wicket taker for the day.

Sussex will want to come out and score more runs and put a commendable total on board on Day 2. Currently placed 7th on the table, only above winless Leicestershire, the visitors are in desperate need for a win.

Middlesex on the other hand are positioned second, and a win will take them to the top of the Division Two points table.

With the stakes high, Day 2 is bound to produce exciting cricket.

Syed Kirmani speaks on Virat Kohli’s T20 World Cup chances

Virat Kohli’s slump in form has become the most talked-about topic in the cricket fraternity. Time and again, former cricketers and cricket analysts have come up with their views regarding the dry patch in the batter’s cricket career. India’s legendary wicketkeeper-batter Syed Kirmani is the latest to join the bandwagon. The veteran has backed Kohli to return back to his form and deliver match-defining performances for ‘Men in Blue’. Virat Kohli to be dropped for the T20 World Cup Kohli is in deep waters due to his forgettable ride during the India tour of England. The 33-year-old failed to score even a single fifty across six innings. In addition, the Delhi-born isn’t playing adequate number of games. He is being given rest time and again from international series. Kohli won’t be travelling to West Indies and Zimbabwe for the white-ball series. However, he is in the scheme of things for the Asia Cup 2022, scheduled in the second-half of August. However, Kirmani is against the idea of dropping the batting maestro from the shortest format of the game. Virat Kohli has loads of experience. He should be in the T20 World Cup squad. Once Kohli returns to form, he will be unstoppable. He could be a game-changer. A player with Kohli's experience and abilities deserves to be in the World Cup squad," Kirmani said during an interview to Dainik Jagran. Kohli facing tough competition in white-ball cricket Furthermore, the former wicketkeeper admitted that an Indian player would have been dropped if he had a rough patch like Kohli. However, considering records and stature of former Indian skipper, it is understandable to give him a long rope. The 33-year-old is facing tough competition from Deepak Hooda for number three position in white-ball cricket. Hooda delivered some exceptional T20I performances against Ireland. However, Kohli has received backing from skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid. "There is tough competition in the Indian team. Look, if someone else was going through the rough patch that Kohli is, he would have been dropped from the team by now. But I feel that established players should be given the benefit of the doubt," Kirmani added.
