Super Smash 2021-22 | Match Review | Bowlers and de Grandhomme essay another Northern-esque win

On January 16, 2022, Northern Knights faced Wellington Firebirds in the 24th match of this year's Super Smash competition at Cobham Oval. It was another bowling special followed by a Colin de Grandhomme fiasco, that helped the Knight seal the deal against Wellington.

After winning the toss, the Firebirds captain Michael Bracewell chose to bat on a slow and tricky pitch. Jeet Raval, the home captain, was taken by surprise by this decision to bat first, as he would have bowled anyway.

The Knights didn’t start well as their star opener Finn Allen went out cheaply. After that, they were unable to form sufficient partnerships and were bowled out for 104 runs in 18.3 overs. Throughout the game, they were always behind the eight-ball.

Anurag Verma picked three wickets which halted the Firebirds’ progress. The spin trio of Mitchell Santner, Joe Walker, and Ish Sodhi took control in the middle overs, sharing five wickets among themselves. Walker and Santner dented the Firebirds with two wickets apiece.

Chasing a low score of 105 was not that easy for the Knights to begin with. They were stranded at 21/2 after 4.1 overs. de Grandhomme then joined hands with his skipper to rebuild the innings with a 36-run stand for the third wicket. Captain Raval struggled his way out for his 15 runs off 28 balls before he was dismissed by his opposite number.

The Kiwi all-rounder 41 (46)* stood tall and made sure that they won this match without much damage. Another crucial hand was played by Henry Cooper 17 (19)* who was a staunch supporter of de Grandhomme.

In the end, Cooper’s maximum over covers on the last ball of the penultimate over sealed the match for Knights with an over to spare as they won it by 6 wickets.

Rachin Ravindra, Michael Bracewell, and Peter Younghusband were successful to drag this match till the 19th over. Ravindra finished with two wickets while the other two spinners picked a wicket each.

With this win, the Knights continue their winning streak to six matches and they will stay firm at the top with 26 points from 8 matches while the Firebirds stay at the third place with 16 points.

Now Northern Knights will face Canterbury Kings on January 21, 2022, and Wellington Firebirds take on Auckland Aces on January 20, 2022.

Captain Oh! Captain | Twitter reacts to Kohli’s resignation as India Test skipper

Virat Kohli, the Indian Test skipper announced his resignation from the post on the evening of January 15, 2022. The decision was not received well by any of the fans or formers cricketers as everybody went into a lull, followed by a shock and all that came out on Twitter in the form of emotional tweets addressed to the most successful Test captain of Indian cricket in it’s more than 75-year-old history as an independent nation. We compiled some of the best tweets here. Twitter was full of other tweets blaming the BCCI leadership of President Sourav Ganguly and Secretary Jay Shah vehicle some others also blamed Kohli for making a rash decision. But we have mentioned only those which celebrated the legacy of the captain which actually made sure that it was India that was considered favourites when it toured in difficult overseas conditions like South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia, also known as SENA countries. Virat, who led the Indian team in a record 68 Tests, more than any other Indian captain, also has the best winning percentage among Indian Test skippers and third-best among all Test skippers in the world who have captained their sides in more than 50 Tests. Australia's Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting are the only two other captains with a win percentage of more than Kohli's 58.82. Kohli, 33, became the captain of the Indian Test team in 2014 after MS Dhoni en-tour Australia decided to step down from his role as India's Test captain after the loss in the first Test. Since then, the Delhi born led India in 68 Tests, winning 40 and losing 17 while 11 Tests ended in a draw.

BPL to go on without fans in the stadium and DRS

The Bangladesh Premier League’s eighth edition will not have fans watching the matches in the stadium as the Governing Council of the BPL has decided to abide by the orders of the Bangladesh Government to curb the spread of Omicron. Hence all the matches will be played behind closed doors. "There will be no fans allowed inside the stadium during the upcoming BPL. These are the directives given by the government and we are following them," BPL governing council secretary Ismail Haider Mallick was quoted as saying Cricbuzz. Mallick also confirmed that it would be the first time since the introduction of DRS in the league, it would not be used. This is a decision that has been taken due to the ban on travel as imposed by many countries across the globe due to rising cases of Omicron variant of Covid-19. ''Hawk-Eye Company is the sole provider of DRS in the world. No one wants to come because of Omicron. We cannot use the DRS in BPL due to Covid situation. Now they (technicians) can't fly. Their two teams are now in two countries, they will not be able to come to Bangladesh in this situation from there,'' said Mallick. The impact of the DRS not being available, especially because TV and the digital audience will be the only sources of revenue and they would have wanted DRS for fairness in competition would be huge. Mallick agreed to it as well. “It's true that the tournament might lose some of its appeal without DRS, but there is nothing to do. We wanted full capacity of crowds in BPL. We also got permission from the government but everything changed because of Omicron,” he said. The BPL 2022 would begin from January 21 and will be played across three venues of Sher-E-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka, Zahur Ahmed Chowdhary Stadium in Chattogram and the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Sylhet. The Playoffs will be played in Dhaka with the final also being played at the same venue on February 18.

Virat Kohli steps down as India Test skipper with an emotional message

Virat Kohli has decided to step down as skipper of the Indian Test team and he announced his decision with an emotional message on his various social media accounts. This decision comes at the backdrop of the 2-1 series loss against South Africa, the only unconquered frontier amongst the tough overseas conditions in Virat Kohli’s captaincy. The Indian team lost the last and final Test to South Africa at Newlands by seven wickets and more than the loss the thing that hogged the limelight was Kohli's and some other Indian players' displeasure towards the broadcasters being showcased through their continuous chirping on the stumps mic. Kohli thanked BCCI, former coach Ravi Shastri, the support staff and MS Dhoni for backing him and showcasing their faith in him to lead the side for seven long years. Virat, who led the Indian team in a record 68 Tests, more than any other Indian captain, also has the best winning percentage among Indian Test skippers and third-best among all Test skippers on the world who have captained their sides in more than 50 Tests. With his resignation from even the Test captaincy, Kohli would remain the skipper without any ICC Trophies to his name even after making it to the knockout stage in almost all tournaments that he led the team in, barring the 2021 T20 World Cup. Post his resignation, it is obvious that Rohit Sharma, who is the vice-captain of the Indian Test side would become the captain and once again the Indian team will be led by the same man in all three formats as Rohit has already been made the skipper in the white-ball formats.
