Virat Kohli, the Indian Test skipper announced his resignation from the post on the evening of January 15, 2022. The decision was not received well by any of the fans or formers cricketers as everybody went into a lull, followed by a shock and all that came out on Twitter in the form of emotional tweets addressed to the most successful Test captain of  Indian cricket in it’s more than 75-year-old history as an independent nation. 

We compiled some of the best tweets here. Twitter was full of other tweets blaming the BCCI leadership of President Sourav Ganguly and Secretary Jay Shah vehicle some others also blamed Kohli for making a rash decision. 

But we have mentioned only those which celebrated the legacy of the captain which actually made sure that it was India that was considered favourites when it toured in difficult overseas conditions like South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia, also known as SENA countries. 

Virat, who led the Indian team in a record 68 Tests, more than any other Indian captain, also has the best winning percentage among Indian Test skippers and third-best among all Test skippers in the world who have captained their sides in more than 50 Tests. Australia's Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting are the only two other captains with a win percentage of more than Kohli's 58.82. 

Kohli, 33, became the captain of the Indian Test team in 2014 after MS Dhoni en-tour Australia decided to step down from his role as India's Test captain after the loss in the first Test. Since then, the Delhi born led India in 68 Tests, winning 40 and losing 17 while 11 Tests ended in a draw.

BPL to go on without fans in the stadium and DRS

The Bangladesh Premier League’s eighth edition will not have fans watching the matches in the stadium as the Governing Council of the BPL has decided to abide by the orders of the Bangladesh Government to curb the spread of Omicron. Hence all the matches will be played behind closed doors. "There will be no fans allowed inside the stadium during the upcoming BPL. These are the directives given by the government and we are following them," BPL governing council secretary Ismail Haider Mallick was quoted as saying Cricbuzz. Mallick also confirmed that it would be the first time since the introduction of DRS in the league, it would not be used. This is a decision that has been taken due to the ban on travel as imposed by many countries across the globe due to rising cases of Omicron variant of Covid-19. ''Hawk-Eye Company is the sole provider of DRS in the world. No one wants to come because of Omicron. We cannot use the DRS in BPL due to Covid situation. Now they (technicians) can't fly. Their two teams are now in two countries, they will not be able to come to Bangladesh in this situation from there,'' said Mallick. The impact of the DRS not being available, especially because TV and the digital audience will be the only sources of revenue and they would have wanted DRS for fairness in competition would be huge. Mallick agreed to it as well. “It's true that the tournament might lose some of its appeal without DRS, but there is nothing to do. We wanted full capacity of crowds in BPL. We also got permission from the government but everything changed because of Omicron,” he said. The BPL 2022 would begin from January 21 and will be played across three venues of Sher-E-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka, Zahur Ahmed Chowdhary Stadium in Chattogram and the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Sylhet. The Playoffs will be played in Dhaka with the final also being played at the same venue on February 18.

Virat Kohli has decided to step down as skipper of the Indian Test team and he announced his decision with an emotional message on his various social media accounts. This decision comes at the backdrop of the 2-1 series loss against South Africa, the only unconquered frontier amongst the tough overseas conditions in Virat Kohli’s captaincy. The Indian team lost the last and final Test to South Africa at Newlands by seven wickets and more than the loss the thing that hogged the limelight was Kohli's and some other Indian players' displeasure towards the broadcasters being showcased through their continuous chirping on the stumps mic. Kohli thanked BCCI, former coach Ravi Shastri, the support staff and MS Dhoni for backing him and showcasing their faith in him to lead the side for seven long years. With his resignation from even the Test captaincy, Kohli would remain the skipper without any ICC Trophies to his name even after making it to the knockout stage in almost all tournaments that he led the team in, barring the 2021 T20 World Cup. Post his resignation, it is obvious that Rohit Sharma, who is the vice-captain of the Indian Test side would become the captain and once again the Indian team will be led by the same man in all three formats as Rohit has already been made the skipper in the white-ball formats.

BBL 11 | Steve O'Keefe, Henriques lead Sixers to derby win over Thunder

After losing to back to back games, Sydney Sixers bounced back in a similar fashion as they beat cross-town rivals Sydney Thunder in the derby clash at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday, January 15th. The charge was led by three of the most experienced players in the Sixers unit, skipper Moises Henriques, vice-captain Danie Hughes and spinner Steve O'Keefe as they dismantled the second-placed Thunder and registered a huge win by 60 runs. The Thunder, which won the toss and decided to field first was set a grand target of 198 to chase by the Sixers. It wasn’t going to be an easy chase but the fact that Thunder kept on losing wickets at the regular intervals made it even tougher. At one point in time, The Thunder were struggling at 80-8 and getting to even a hundred seemed very difficult. But an out of the blue fifty from Chris Green, where he scored 50 off just 31 balls, hitting four boundaries and a six made it possible for the team to get past the 100 run mark and eventually reach 137-9. An unbeaten 17 off 21 balls by Tanveer Sangha was also important. For Sixers, O’Keefe was the pick of the bowlers, getting four crucial wickets of Alex Hales, Alex Ross, Daniel Sams and Oliver Davis. Ben Dwarshuis also picked up two wickets. Earlier in the evening, after being put to bat, Sixers got off to a flyer after the fall of Jack Edwards in the second over. Josh Philippe and Hughes put up 82 runs for the second wicket. Philippe eventually got out for 57. However, Hughes continued and added another 77 with skipper Moises Henriques before getting out on 66 off 48 balls. Henriques did not bother even as wickets fell on the other end and scored an unbeaten 47 off just 27 balls to get his team to 197-5 in their 20 overs. Post this win, the Sixers overtook the Thunder and have now reached the second position in the BBL 2021-22 Points Table even as both have an equal number of points (31). The Sixers have a game in their hand as compared to Thunder. Perth Scorchers remain at the top of the table.
