Sri Lanka move to fourth position in WTC 2021-23 Points Table

It has finally been a respite for Sri Lanka cricket fans in times of political and economic crisis in the country.

The Sri Lanka Men’s cricket team secured a 1-0 victory in the recent Test series against Bangladesh. After the first Test match ended as a draw, Sri Lanka made a fighting comeback to win the 2nd Test by ten wickets. The critical performers of the team were Asitha Fernando and Angelo Mathews in the bowling and batting departments, respectively.

After winning this fixture, Dimuth Karunaratne-led side gained 12 points and dethroned the Pakistan side from the fourth spot in the World Test Championship 2021-23 points Table. They currently have 40 points with three wins in this cycle.

Pakistan will tour Sri Lanka to play 2 Test matches in July 2022 and look to improve their position in the points table.

Australia, South Africa, and India maintain their first, second, and third position, respectively, in the points table.

In the 2nd Test, Bangladesh posted 365 on the board, Sri Lanka scored 506 and took a lead of 141 runs in the first innings. After that, the home team was dismissed for a score of 169 due to a terrific bowling performance from Lankan bowlers. The visitors chased down 29 runs in three overs without losing any wickets.

Fernando was named ‘Player of the Match’ and became only the second bowler from Sri Lanka to register a 10-wicket haul in an away Test match.

With an unbeaten 145 in the 1st innings of the second Test, Mathews garnered 344 runs in 2 matches and was named as ‘Player of the Series’.

In their next series, Sri Lanka will host Australia in June-July. On the other hand, Pakistan will take on West Indies in a 3-match ODI series in the following month.
