Shreyas Iyer's incredible run against Sri Lanka helps him make massive rankings move

India batter Shreyas Iyer’s brilliant run with the bat against Sri Lanka in the T20Is brought some fruitful results for the right-hander after he jumped 27 places to 18th spot on the latest ICC rankings.

Iyer played a massive role in India’s success against the Lankan Lions as he struck three unbeaten fifties during the course of the series. The Men in Blue completed a 3-0 whitewash win.

The list is topped by Pakistan captain Babar Azam who is sitting at the helm and is followed by teammate and wicket-keeper batsman Mohammad Rizwan at second position. Sri Lanka’s Pathum Nissanka jumped six places and is now placed at ninth position in the table while KL Rahul is the only Indian batter in the top 10.

India captain Rohit Sharma who didn’t have a great run during the series dropped to 13th on the rankings and Virat Kohli who was rested for the fixtures dropped out of the top 10.

Apart from this, Bhuvneshwar Kumar also had a rise of three spots and moved to 17th position on the bowler rankings.

“Shreyas Iyer’s efforts helped him jump 27 places to 18th on the latest batter rankings, while team-mate Bhuvneshwar Kumar jumped three spots to 17th on the bowler rankings,” an ICC statement read.

“Former India captain Virat Kohli - who was rested for the series - fell out of the top 10 after dropping five places to 15th,” it added.

IND vs SL | 1st Test: Virat Kohli's 100th Test to have spectators in stands

The first Test between India and Sri Lanka in Mohali which begins on March 4, 2022 will now have fans in the stands. It was earlier decided that the clash will be held behind closed doors but the BCCI has now given permission to have spectators in the ground. "The first Test between India and Sri Lanka to be played at the Punjab Cricket Stadium in Mohali will not be held behind closed doors. The decision to allow spectators into the ground is one taken by the State Cricketing Associations and in the present circumstances, is based on various factors. I have spoken with the PCA office bearers and they have confirmed that cricket fans will be able to witness the historic moment of Virat Kohli playing his 100th Test match," Jay Shah said in a statement on Tuesday (March 1). "While we started off the West Indies Tour of India behind closed doors, the encouraging dip in COVID-19 cases allowed the hosting associations to permit crowds. Based on the advisories by the State Health Authorities fans were able to witness the games in Kolkata and Dharamsala while UPCA had Lucknow T20I without crowds owing to polling a day before the match.” Former India skipper Virat Kohli will be playing his 100th Test when he takes the field against the Lankan Lions. Shah wished luck to Kohli as he adds another feather to his hat. "I am really looking forward to Virat Kohli's 100th Test and wish our champion cricketer the very best. This is an occasion for our fans to savour. May he continue to represent the country in many more matches to come."
