In another blow to Team India, star batsman Shreyas Iyer is unlikely to be a part of the squad that will feature in the upcoming Asia Cup. According to media reports, a BCCI official has revealed the right-handed batsman, who is currently undergoing rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), reported back pain, and consequently took an injection.

"Iyer recently took an injection for his back pain at the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy. His back is still giving him trouble," a senior BCCI source was quoted as saying by CricTracker.

Iyer has been suffering from recurring back issues for some time now. Earlier this year, he was ruled out of the first two Tests against Australia after reporting discomfort in his back during the ODI series against Sri Lanka.

He returned to the team ahead of the third Test in Indore, but eventually pulled out of the playing XI midway through the 4th match in Ahmedabad after the back pain surfaced again. He was subsequently ruled out of IPL 2023 the World Test Championship Final.

Since then, he has been rehabilitating at the NCA, along with KL Rahul (knee injury) and Jasprit Bumrah (back injury) in a bid to get ready for the Asia Cup and the marquee ODI World Cup.

However, this recent development is a huge blow to him and the Indian think-tank as the flamboyant batsman is a key asset for the Men in Blue in the middle-order in this format.
