Sanju Samson who was included in India's Asia Cup 2023 squad as a backup to KL Rahul has now been released from the squad as KL Rahul has joined the Indian team in Sri Lanka. According to the reports, Sanju Samson has left Sri Lanka and KL Rahul is likely to slot in directly into the XI in place of Ishan Kishan for the big game against Pakistan on September 10.

India originally announced a 17-member squad for the Asia Cup, which included KL Rahul, and Sanju Samson was the 18th member as a backup to KL Rahul. The Karnataka batter had a slight niggle issue which kept him out of the group stages of Asia Cup but has recovered completely now and joined the Indian squad in Colombo.

The Indian wicketkeeper batter injured himself in the IPL 2023 and has since undergone a long rehabilitation, which included surgery as well. His return comes as a welcome news for India as he has been pretty consistent at number 5 in ODIs, and it would be interesting to see how he tackles the quality of Pakistan bowlers if he does play in the XI in the India-Pakistan Super Fours game.

As far as Sanju Samson is concerned, he is not included in India’s World Cup side as well and is also not part of the Asian Games squad. There is a possibility that he would be included in the Asian Games side, which has Ruturaj Gaikwad as captain.

In the Asia Cup 2023, the Rohit Sharma-led side has won one game so far while their opening game against Pakistan was washed out. Jasprit Bumrah, India’s star pacer also flew back to Mumbai for the birth of his first child after the Pakistan game but is all set to be back for the Super Fours stage of the continental cup.
