Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar will be honoured as a "national icon" by the Election Commission in a ceremony at the Rang Bhawan Auditorium, New Delhi on Wednesday, August 23. This accolade aims to harness Tendulkar's immense influence among the youth to boost voter engagement, particularly in the upcoming 2024 general elections, as stated by the EC.

Distinguished as both the youngest and the first sportsperson to achieve this recognition, Tendulkar's impact on the cricketing realm has been profound. The EC's decision to collaborate with cricket legend signifies a significant stride towards leveraging his immense influence, particularly among the youth, to boost voter engagement, notably in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

Tendulkar's emergence on the international stage was nothing short of remarkable. At the tender age of 17, he notched his first Test century, a match-saving innings at Old Trafford. By the time he turned 25, he had amassed an astonishing 16 Test hundreds.

In 2000, he etched his name in history by becoming the inaugural batter to accumulate 50 international centuries. His feats continued with surpassing Brian Lara as the leading Test run-scorer in 2008 and subsequently reaching milestones like 13,000 Test runs, 30,000 international runs, and 50 Test hundreds.

And on November 16, 2013, he retired from Test cricket after 200th Test, against West Indies. Sachin represented India in 200 Tests, the most by any player.
