The road to Season 4 of the SA20 begins with a bang as the much-awaited player auction is all set to take place on Tuesday, 9 September in Johannesburg. With at least 72 slots up for grabs, a record R41 million salary cap per team and fresh auction innovations in play, this edition is shaping up to be the most strategic and high-stakes auction in the league’s short but eventful history.

SA20 Season 4 Auction Set For September 9

While the team structure remains consistent: 18 players per squad with a maximum of seven overseas and a minimum of 11 South African players, the dynamics have shifted considerably thanks to a major bump in the salary cap. The increase from R34 million to R41 million per franchise opens the door for teams to be more aggressive and flexible in their bidding.

Adding to the drama are the Right to Match (RTM) Cards, making their debut this season. This new feature allows franchises to retain a player from their previous squad by matching the highest bid made for that player during the auction. The number of RTM cards available will be determined by how many South African players a team has retained ahead of the auction.

Each team will also have the option to bring in one Wildcard player, either local or international, whose fee will not be counted under the main salary cap. This offers franchises a unique opportunity to add firepower to their squads without worrying about budget constraints.

Retention Rules And Youth-First Approach

Ahead of the SA20 auction, teams can retain or pre-sign up to six players, split evenly between three locals and three international cricketers. This retention window allows teams to maintain a core group while still having the flexibility to strengthen during the auction.

Notably, the league has scrapped the Rookie Draft. Instead, it is now mandatory for each team to include a minimum of two players under the age of 23 in their final 19-member squad. This ensures that the league continues to serve as a launchpad for emerging South African stars.

The auction will once again be conducted by the Richard Madley. Fans can catch the action live on SuperSport and the SA20 YouTube channel.

SA20 To Kick Off On December 26

Once the final paddle drops on 9 September, the countdown begins to Season 4 of SA20, which officially kicks off on 26 December 2025. The stage is set, the stakes are high and the auction room is about to get very, very busy.
