The veteran Australian wicketkeeper and the current coach of the Netherland Men's cricket team, Ryan Campbell, has come out from an induced coma after he had suffered a cardiac arrest. Though he got out of it, he remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for observation in an England Hospital.
According to ESPNCricinfo, the former Aussie batter was playing with his children in the backyard; during the weekend before he started experiencing severe chest pains and difficulty breathing. Although he remained in an induced coma, the doctors stated that he made some successful attempts in breathing by himself.
According to his brother, Mark Campbell, "They've taken the heavy sedation off, so he's actually woken up. Now they're just looking at trying to work out what's wrong with his heart. He did a few tests and they're saying there doesn't appear at this stage to be any brain damage, his brain wasn't starved of oxygen."
Mark further stated, "They're not sure now why his heart is still being arrhythmic. So that's another issue that they're now going to look at over there. He's been in intensive care since Saturday night. His wife is there with him and one of his friends from Hong Kong has flown to be there."
In his statement, he was overwhelmed with the support and response he got for his cricketing brother, "The family have been overwhelmed with the messages of support we've been getting from all over the world."
Ryan Campbell was known for his swashbuckling batting approach. He was predominant in his first-class career for Western Australia, for whom he scored 6009 runs.
In 2017, Campbell became the head coach of the Dutch cricket team. Also, during the 2016 T20 World Cup, the former batter made his debut at the age of 44 for Hong Kong, making him the oldest player to make a debut in the shortest format.
