Kumar Sangakkara congratulated Uttar Pradesh wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel upon receiving his maiden Test match call-up for India on Friday (January 12).

The Sri Lankan batting legend underlined attributes that have helped Jurel forge an impressive rise to find his spot in India's squad for the first two Tests against England

Having seen Jurel ply his trade as an earnest cricketer for Rajasthan Royals (RR) in IPL 2023 as the franchise's Director of Cricket, Sangakkara praised his "work ethic" and "demeanour", reinforcing these as qualities that have stood out with the 22-year-old in his experience so far.

Jurel has made quite a rapid rise at an early age. The talented youngster has played 15 first-class matches with 790 runs at an average of 46.47 and was part of India A's recent squad for the tour of South Africa where he made an encouraging 69 in Benoni.

Sangakkara Hails Dhruv Jurel

During the IPL 2023, Sangakkara saw his valiant middle-order aggressor not once display any sense of hesitation and nerves embracing a challenging role as he hammered his runs at an eye-catching strike rate of 172 over 13 matches of the campaign.

"Firstly his work ethic and his demeanor. He understands pressure, he came last season in one of the most difficult positions and scored so many runs for us," Sangakkara told ANI.

"An absolute match winner in the short format but this is a really good test of his technique, character and application being in the Test side. He's always going to do well, he's just that kind of player."

An immediate Test cap is unlikely for the young turk amid the presence of incumbent KL Rahul and his backup KS Bharat in a squad which misses premier wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant and also Ishan Kishan. But Jurel would've taken it as a huge boost to his morale being selected for the senior national side at such a young age.
