The Indian team's strategy for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 has taken a rather perplexing turn, raising eyebrows in the cricketing fraternity. The national selectors recently finalized a 17-member squad for the upcoming T20 International series in South Africa.

BCCI rethinks Kohli's inclusion in T20 World Cup 2024 team

This selection seems to have laid down the foundation of the core group for the World Cup. However, the future involvement of two of India's cricket stalwarts, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, in the team's structure remains shrouded in ambiguity.

As the countdown to the T20 World Cup 2024 begins, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), along with the selection committee, is diligently working to curate the most formidable team. However, recent reports indicate a significant conundrum for the selectors, particularly regarding the accommodation of India’s batting mainstay, Virat Kohli in the team's lineup.

Now, a prominent journalist has disclosed that Rohit has been confirmed as the captain for the upcoming T20 World Cup, while Kohli is set to be left out of the team. This decision was reached at a recent BCCI meeting in Delhi, attended by the five selectors, head coach Rahul Dravid, and three BCCI officials.

The emergence of players like Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal has led to Kohli not securing a spot in the squad. BCCI officials are planning to discuss this matter with Kohli. The journalist also mentioned that Rohit had expressed a desire for an early decision on the captaincy for the World Cup, to which the BCCI has now responded by choosing him for the role.

The journalist further elaborated that during the BCCI meeting, discussions were held about the future strategies for the T20 World Cup. The conversation focused on having Rohit and either Gill or Jaiswal as the opening batsmen, with Ishan Kishan playing at number three.

It is worth mentioning that the potential exclusion of Kohli from the team is particularly startling, given his remarkable achievements in previous T20 World Cups. Kohli not only stands as the highest run-scorer in the history of the tournament, with an impressive tally of 1,141 runs across 25 innings, but he also has a stellar average of 81.50 and a strike rate of 131.30.

Furthermore, his record of 14 fifties and the distinction of being named Player of the Tournament in 2014 and 2016 highlight his invaluable contributions. The contemplation of his exclusion from the team, despite such a distinguished record, has left many in the cricketing world bewildered, awaiting the final decision of the selectors with keen interest.
