Team India captain Rohit Sharma might be rested for part of the upcoming all-format West Indies tour, which includes, five T20Is, three ODIs, and two Tests set to take place from July 12 until August 13.

Since taking over the leadership across all formats following Virat Kohli's resignation, Rohit has shouldered a hectic workload that has adversely affected his batting form.

The Mumbai batter had endured a dismal IPL campaign, managing just 332 runs in 16 matches with a strike rate of 132.80. He also failed to leave a significant impact during the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia at The Oval.

In a statement provided to the Times of India, a source suggested that the Rohit Sharma could miss either the Test series or the white-ball fixtures, or potentially even both in order to manage his workload:

“Rohit looked a bit jaded during the IPL and the World Test Championship final in England. The selectors want him to rest for some part of the West Indies tour. He’s likely to miss the Tests or the eight-match white-ball series (three ODIs and five T20Is) to follow. The selectors will speak to Rohit and then take a decision."

If Rohit is rested from the two-match Test series, Ajinkya Rahane could be entrusted with the leadership responsibilities, considering his resurgence and brilliant performance in recent times, including the World Test Championship final against Australia.

Following an exhausting first half of the year and an upcoming hectic schedule for the latter half, Team India is currently taking a month-long hiatus following the conclusion of the WTC final.

The second half of the year will kick off with the tour of the West Indies, which will be followed up by some big challenges like the 2023 Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup 2023. The squads for the Caribbean tour are expected to be announced on June 27.
