In a significant development, Mumbai Indians have roped in Riley Meredith to their squad as a replacement player for Jhye Richardson for the ongoing IPL 2023. Meredith, who represents the Hobart Hurricanes in the BBL, has previously played for the franchise.

Despite being incredibly talented, Richardson hasn't lived up to the expectations due to frequent injury setbacks. After being ruled out of the Big Bash League in the midway, the ace pacer was in line to make his comeback during the IPL 2023. However, a recurrence of the hamstring injury sidelined him from the showpiece event.

Meanwhile, Meredith's inclusion was expected, as MI needed a hit-the-deck seamer to strengthen their pace unit, devoid of their ace Jasprit Bumrah. The 26-year-old has been in scintillating form, as he was the highest wicket-taker for the Hurricanes in the BBL this season, scalping 21 wickets at an impressive strike rate of 15.7 in 14 appearances.

Speaking of Mumbai Indians, the five-time champions had a forgettable start to their IPL 2023 campaign, incurring an eight-wicket defeat to Royal Challengers Bangalore in their first game. The Rohit Sharma-led outfit will take on arch rivals Chennai Super Kings in their second group-stage fixture on Saturday.
