In a move that has is surely set to shock the cricketing world, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are set to part ways with their skipper Faf du Plessis and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction. This unexpected decision has fuelled speculation that RCB is gearing up for a fresh start, with a new captain and a revamped strategy to finally end their long-standing title drought.

With the IPL 2025 mega auction expected to be held in late November or early December, all eyes are on RCB as they prepare to make bold moves that could redefine their future.

Faf du Plessis Set to Exit RCB Before IPL 2025 Auction

According to Anandabazar Patrika, Faf du Plessis is set to be released by RCB. The South African, who took over the reins of RCB in 2022, was a steady hand at the helm and delivered a commendable performance with the bat in IPL 2024. The South African stalwart scored 438 runs at an average of 29.2 and an impressive strike rate of 161.62.

However, at 40 years old, the time may have come for RCB to explore younger leadership options, and the upcoming auction presents the perfect storm for such a transformation.

Despite his contributions, RCB's management has reportedly decided to part ways with the veteran. With du Plessis’ release, RCB are sending a clear message—they are prepared to leave no stone unturned in their quest for IPL glory.

Time’s Up for Glenn Maxwell

The writing appears to be on the wall for Glenn Maxwell, as well. The flamboyant Australian, once the backbone of RCB's middle order, struggled to leave an impact in IPL 2024. In a season to forget, Maxwell mustered only 52 runs at a paltry average of 5.78 across 10 matches. His performance with the ball, although slightly better, saw him pick up 6 wickets with an economy of 8.06.

Given Maxwell’s exorbitant price tag of INR 11 crore, RCB is reportedly looking to invest in younger talent. Both Will Jacks and Cameron Green, who are expected to be retained, have shown immense promise and are likely to form the core of RCB’s new look side. The Australian powerhouse might be feeling the heat as RCB looks to clean house and gear up for a fresh assault on the coveted IPL title.

It is worth mentioning that RCB’s IPL 2024 journey was a tale of two halves. After a dismal start, during which many wrote them off, the team bounced back spectacularly, winning six consecutive matches to secure a playoff spot. However, their hopes were dashed in the Eliminator, when Rajasthan Royals knocked them out.

With fresh leadership and the likes of Green and Jacks set to play crucial roles, the franchise is gearing up for what promises to be an explosive IPL 2025 season.

Meanwhile, RCB's decision to part ways with their two stalwarts is indeed biting the bullet—but whether it will be a masterstroke or a misstep is anyone’s guess. Only time will tell if the upcoming auction will be the turning point they so desperately need.
