In a massive setback for New Zealand, star all-rounder Michael Bracewell is ruled out of the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India due to an injury. Bracewell, who is currently participating in T20 Blast in England, ruptured his right Achilles while batting for Worcestershire Rapids.

This injury puts Bracewell out of commission for six to eight months and will undergo surgery on Thursday in the UK, before starting his lengthy rehabilitation, which will rule him out of the marquee event in October later this year.

As quoted by coach Gary Stead Bracewell's absence will be a big blow for the national team, who are already racing against time for skipper Kane Williamson to get fit for the event, which is highly unlikely.

Here's what Stead said:

"Firstly, you always feel for the player when injury strikes and especially when it means they will have to miss a world event. Michael’s a great team man and has had a fantastic 15 months for the BLACKCAPS since his international debut."

"We’ve seen his exceptional skills in all three facets of the game and he was shaping as an important player for us at the world cup in India. Michael’s naturally pretty disappointed, but also pragmatic in acknowledging that injuries are a part of the sport and he’s now turning his focus to his rehabilitation."

Bracewell gained superstardom after an impressive showing in the series against India ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, which saw him get purchased by Royal Challengers Bangalore as a replacement for Will Jacks.

In 19 ODIs, the 32-year-old has scored 510 runs at an average of 42.5, which include two blistering hundreds as well.
