Ranji Trophy 2021-22 | Day 1 | Round-up: Devdutt Padikkal makes headlines with unbeaten ton

Karnataka’s Devdutt Padikkal made headlines on the first day of the Ranji Trophy match against Puducherry after he struck a fine century and remained unbeaten at 161 to help the side put 293/3 before stumps in Chennai.

The side lost a couple of early wickets and were reduced to 39/2 before Padikkal and Krishnamurthy Siddharth got into the act. The two batters rescued the side with a 223-run stand for the third wicket. Siddharth eventually departed for 85.

Padikkal was then joined by Manish Pandey and the left-right batting duo made sure that there were no further fall of wickets in the day. Pandey was not out at 21 on Day 1.

Punjab vs Tripura

On a low scoring Day 1 during the clash between Punjab and Tripura in Delhi, the Punjab side was pushed on to the back foot after being reduced to 79/7. In reply to Tripura’s 127 in the first innings, Punjab were off to a dismal start after losing two wickets for just 10 runs. Anmolpreet Singh and Sandeep Singh tried to steady the ship and chipped in with a partnership of 44 runs for the third wicket.

But Mandeep’s departure for 18 broke the shackles as Punjab lost wickets in quick succession and were left tottering at 79/7 before stumps were called. Manisankar Murasingh scalped a fifer for his side.

Earlier, Punjab bowlers produced an exceptional performance and bowled out Tripura early during the course. Baltej Singh had a five-for to his name while Kaul and Vinay Choudhary picked up a couple of wickets each.

Saurashtra vs Goa

Riding on some fine piece of batting from Chirag Jani and Sheldon Jackson on Day 1 of the match against Goa, Saurashtra posted 343/7 in Ahmedabad. Batting first, Saurashtra lost Snell Patel with no score on the board but Harvik Desai and Jani came in for the team’s rescue. The two stitched a partnership of 75 runs with Jani doing the bulk scoring. Desai was later sent back in the hut for 14.

Jani was then joined by Cheteshwar Pujara and they put up a stand of 53 runs for the third wicket before Pujara who looked steady, was trapped in front of the stumps by Prabhudessai for 28.

But the real dominance with the bat for Saurashtra began now as Jani along with Jackson pushed the Goa team on the back foot. Both the batters together scored 102 runs for the fourth wicket with Jani scoring a massive 140 and Jackson eventually remaining unbeaten at 96.

Tamil Nadu vs Jharkhand

It was Baba Indrajith and R Sai Kishore who rescued Tamil Nadu from a tricky situation and provided them resistance against Jharkhand on Day 1 in Guwahati. Batting first, Tamil Nadu were reduced to 32/4 when Indrajith was joined by Sai Kishore in the middle.

The two batters then began the rebuilding process for the side and stitched a stand of 171 runs with Indrajith notching up a ton and Sai Kishore chipping in with 81. Tamil Nadu ended the day’s proceedings at 256/7. Rahul Shukla picked up three wickets for his side.

Railways vs J&K

Railways’ Karan Sharma rattled the Jammu and Kashmir batting unit after he returned with six wickets on the first day of the match in Chennai. The J&K side were off to a decent start with openers Suryansh Raina and Qamran Iqbal putting up 88 runs for the first wicket. But Raina’s dismissal for 28 saw wickets going down for J&K at regular intervals and they were reduced to 238/8 to eventually get bowled out for 259. Iqbal top-scored with 83.
