Railways outclass Maharashtra to bag Senior Women's T20 Trophy for 10th time

Defending champions Railways stamped their authority again by bagging the Senior Women’s T20 title for the record 10th time. Dayalan Hemalatha and Sabbhineni Meghana starred for the Senh Rana-led side with sublime half-centuries. They made short work of Maharashtra’s target of 160/4 to chase it in 18.1 overs.

Smriti Mandhana sparkles on the grand stage to take Maharashtra’s total to 160/4

India’s top opening batter, Smriti Mandhana (84), led from the front when it mattered the most. The southpaw was in the middle of a lean patch, with no significant score credited to her name. However, her class batting was on full display on the grand stage after she had elected to bat first. She stitched a 74-run opening partnership with Shivali Shinde (30), taking on the much-fancied Railways’ bowling.

Mandhana took 56 balls for her 84, with eleven fours and three sixes to her name. Her innings propelled Maharashtra’s score to 160/4 in 20 overs. Swagatika Rath took three wickets, while one went to Sneh Rana.

S.Meghana and Dayalan Hemalatha allow Railways to chase down a relatively stiff target

Notwithstanding Railways’ batting prowess, it was not going to be an easy chase for them. However, Sabbhineni Meghana ensured that Railways were off to a rollicking start. With Nuzhwat Parween struggling at the other end, Meghana took it upon herself to make the best use of the powerplay.

Parween returned to the pavilion on 10, with the score reading 56/1 at the end of seven overs. Dayalan Hemalatha joined Meghana at the crease, and the latter brought up her fifty soon. Meghana was in supreme touch and sent the ball to the boundary nine times.

Hemalatha looked determined to get Railways over the line after Meghana fell on 52. She played at a brisk rate, with her 65 coming off 41 balls. Her match-winning innings included nine fours and two sixes.

Maharashtra managed to prise out Hemalatha’s wicket, but it was too late. Anjali Sarvani and the captain, Rana, ensured no further damage to defeat Maharashtra by seven wickets.

Brief scores: Railways 165/3 in 18.1 overs (Dayalan Hemalatha 65, Sabbhineni Meghana 52, Maya Sonawane 22/2) defeated Maharashtra (Smriti Mandhana 84, Swagatika Rath 33/3) by 7 wickets

England slip to lowest rankings in Test Format since 1995, Ben Stokes expresses disappointment

In the latest ICC Test rankings, the England cricket team have slumped to the 6th position, which is their lowest since 1995. On the other hand, arch-rivals Australia currently hold pole position with two back-to-back series victories. These ratings cover all the Test matches played since May 2019. The results prior to May 21 carry a 50% weightage, while the subsequent ones have a 100% weightage. In this period, the English team have been a part of 38 Tests, and secured victories in only 13 of them, while drawing nine and losing the remaining ones. In the last 17 Tests matches, the team has won on a single occasion, and have been disappointing with their performances. The newly-appointed England captain Ben Stokes opined on the latest ICC rankings of the team. “Being completely realistic, winning one game in 17 is nowhere near good enough for the people we have in our team,” Stokes was quoted by 'i News'. The dashing all-rounder accepted that the team has not been good enough with their performances. He further added that the team certainly has a scope for improvement, but it can’t happen overnight. “We can look at that and go there is only one to go, which is up. We have not been good enough. That is not a dig at any individual as I have been part of that. As a team we know we have not been good enough, not played to the standard we know we can," the marquee all-rounder reckoned. “It’s about understanding that and fixing it but we need to understand things won’t happen overnight. I can’t just expect it to click and all of a sudden we are No 1 in a year’s time," Stokes concluded. These rankings are also a reflection of their shattering 4-nil loss to Australia in the Ashes 2021/22, and then following it up by 0-1 against West Indies in March. Not surprisingly, England is languishing at bottom of the World Test Championship 2021-23 points table as well with one win in 13 appearances. In their next assignment, England will go up against New Zealand in June and will face South Africa in July. These series will be played on their home soil and will serve as an opportunity for them to improve their position on the WTC table.
