R Ashwin surpasses Kapil Dev to become second highest wicket-taker in Test cricket for India

India spinner R Ashwin has now become the second highest wicket-taker in Test cricket for India. Ashwin surpassed Kapil Dev’s tally of 434 wickets in the longer format during the first Test against Sri Lanka in Mohali.

The right-arm bowler had already three wickets at the time of writing and achieved the feat. Ashwin’s scalps included the dismissals of Lahiru Thirimanne, Pathum Nissanka and Charith Asalanka during the course. Former spinner Anil Kumble is the highest wicket-taker for India and has 619 dismissals to his name in Test cricket.

Ashwin is the fourth Indian bowler to have picked more than 400 Test wickets.

Talking about the match, India had enforced a follow-on after bundling out Sri Lanka for 174 in the reply to 574/8 (D) in the first innings. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja unleashed a brilliant all-round show after he scored 175* and then bagged a fifer in the first innings.

Sri Lanka’s Charith Asalanka unleashed a counter-attack against the Indian bowlers in the latter phase of the second session on Day 3 of the first Test in Mohali after he struck 20 runs in one of Ravindra Jadeja’s overs. India had enforced a follow-on after bundling out Sri Lanka for 174 in the first innings and then scalped some early wickets in the second innings as well. The visitors lost early wickets and were reduced to 45/3 when Angelo Mathews and Dhananjaya de Silva joined hands and provided some resistance with a partnership of 45 runs for the fourth wicket before Jadeja broke the stand after removing De Silva for 30. Mathews (27*) was then joined by Asalanka (20*) and the two batters took Sri Lanka to 120/4 at Tea. Jadeja had earlier followed his 175* with a fifer in the first innings.

Earlier, in the day, India lost an early wicket after Shafali Verma was cleaned up by Diana Baig for zero before Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma steadied the ship for the side with a partnership of 92 runs for the second wicket. But Deepti’s departure for 40 off 57 and Mandhana’s dismissal for 52 off 75 was followed by a quick fall of wickets as the Pakistan bowlers pushed India on the back foot. India were 114/6 when Pooja Vastrakar and Sneh Rana came in for the side’s rescue with a 122-run stand for the seventh wicket. While Rana remained unbeaten at 53 off 48, Vastrakar scored 67 in 59 balls to help India put 244/7 in 50 overs. “I'm very happy, my first player of the match award, in my first WC game. The plan was to somehow try and get to 200. I like to bat in pressure situations, even in domestics, I told the same to Sneh (Rana), to keep the partnership going,” Vastrakar said after the match.

Beginning the proceedings on Day 3 at 108/4, Charith Asalanka and Pathum Nissanka added 53 more runs to the tally before Asalanka was trapped in front of the stumps for 29 by Bumrah, leaving the visitors struggling at 161/5. The misery for the Lankan team stretched after Jadeja rattled the lower order. He first removed Niroshan Dickwella who was caught by Shreyas Iyer for two and then followed it with the dismissal of Suranga Lakmal two deliveries later reducing the side to 164/7. Pacer Mohammed Shami then got into the act and scalped the wicket of Lasith Embuldeniya, courtesy a terrific short delivery. He was caught by Mayank Agarwal for zero. Jadeja then didn’t take much time to wrap up the Sri Lankan innings after he removed Vishwa Fernando and Lahiru Kumara quickly. India en-forced a follow-on.
