India women’s team began the World Cup campaign on a positive note after thumping arch-rivals Pakistan by 107 runs in Mount Maunganui on Sunday. Chasing 245, Pakistan could only manage to get 137 on the board before getting bowled out in 43 overs. 

The Pakistan side never really got into the groove and lost wickets at regular intervals to get reduced to 113/8 before getting bundled out eventually. 

Rajeshwari Gayakwad rattled the Pakistan batting unit as she returned with a four-wicket haul for just 31 runs in 10 overs while experienced bowler Jhulan Goswami and Sneh Rana scalped a couple of wickets each. Sidra Ameen top-scored with 30 off 64 for Pakistan. 

Earlier, in the day, India lost an early wicket after Shafali Verma was cleaned up by Diana Baig for zero before Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma steadied the ship for the side with a partnership of 92 runs for the second wicket. 

But Deepti’s departure for 40 off 57 and Mandhana’s dismissal for 52 off 75 was followed by a quick fall of wickets as the Pakistan bowlers pushed India on the back foot. 

India were 114/6 when Pooja Vastrakar and Sneh Rana came in for the side’s rescue with a 122-run stand for the seventh wicket. While Rana remained unbeaten at 53 off 48, Vastrakar scored 67 in 59 balls to help India put 244/7 in 50 overs. 













“I'm very happy, my first player of the match award, in my first WC game. The plan was to somehow try and get to 200. I like to bat in pressure situations, even in domestics, I told the same to Sneh (Rana), to keep the partnership going,” Vastrakar said after the match.

India began the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 campaign against Pakistan in Mount Maunganui on Sunday. Batting first, the Indian team had a disappointing start to the proceedings after Shafali Verma was cleaned up for a six-ball zero by Diana Baig before opener Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma came in for the side’s rescue. The two batters stitched a stand of 92 runs for the second wicket with Mandhana notching up a fifty while Deepti scoring 40 in 57 balls. But Deepti’s dismissal at a team score of 96 was followed by a flurry of wickets, leaving India tottering at 114/6. Later, it was Sneh Rana and Pooja Vastrakar who provided the resistance with a partnership of 122 runs for the seventh wicket. While Rana remained unbeaten at 53, Vastrakar scored 67 in just 59 balls, helping India put 244/7 in 50 overs. Nida Dar and Nashra Sandhu scalped two wickets each for Pakistan while Diana, Anam Amin and Fatima Sana had one dismissal apiece. “It wasn't a good start for me, I want to attack the batters and maintain my consistency, but I think I pulled it back, 2 for 45 was pretty good. I want to bowl according to situations, the target is chaseable, the wicket looks flat and the ball is coming nicely onto the bat. The partnership was good, we can learn from them, we have good batters on our side as well. My responsibility is to build partnerships with the other batters,” Dar said after the innings.
