  • Punjab Kings Acquisition Of Cpl Side St Lucia Leads To Name Change From Zouks To Kings

Punjab Kings’ acquisition of CPL side St. Lucia, leads to name change from Zouks to Kings

The Caribbean Premier League franchise Saint Lucia Zouks have been renamed to  Saint Lucia Kings to get it closer in recognition to its sister franchise in the Indian Premier League, the Punjab Kings. The team now also sports a new logo, totally different from the previous one.

The team, in a media release, confirmed the news and wrote an explanation behind it. It said, "The new name and logo are consistent with the KPH Dream Cricket brand while still capturing the essence of Saint Lucia through the name and national colours of Saint Lucian Flag," the release said.

KPH Dream  Cricket Private Limited acquired the ownership rights of the franchise in 2020. It is the same company that owns the Punjab Kings in IPL and that franchise also changed its name from Kings XI Punjab to its current name of Punjab Kings before the start of the 2021 season.

"The brand name and monogram, lion in the team's logo stand for exuberance. While the blue epitomises the sky and the sea, specifically the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea which encircle the country, the roaring lion monogram infuses vigour and vibrancy,” the release further added stating that the main identity of Saint Lucia as the country has been retained.

Daren Sammy, the former St. Lucia captain who quit this year to become the mentor and Assistant Coach of the team while speaking on this occasion said, "I love the logo and I love the new name, and I truly hope that the name can inspire our players to play like the true Kings that we are.”

Earlier, after IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals bought majority stakes in the Barbados based franchise of the CPL, its name was also changed to Brabadois Royals from Barbados Tridents.

The 2021 edition of the CPL will take place between August 26 and September 15, at Warner Park in St Kitts & Nevis.

ENG vs IND | Ollie pope blames T20 Blast scheduling for his injury woes

England batsman Ollie Pope is suffering from a grade three quadriceps tear which he picked up during the T20 Blast. He might miss the first Test against India if not declared fit and the Surrey player is worried about it. The right-handed batsmen blamed the tight scheduling of the T20 Blast games in which he had to play five games in just eight days, and the top of which he was returning after 10-day isolation being a close contact of someone who had tested Covid positive. "With the schedule, I think we played five T20s in seven [eight] days after I had to do 10 days sitting on the couch isolating as a close contact. Going from 10 days on a couch to five games in seven days is always going to provide a little risk. It is frustrating but hopefully, I'll sort this quad out and that's the end of it,” Pope was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo. Talking about his current situation and whether he will be able to take part in the first Test starting Thursday, August 4th, Pope said, "I've been hitting a lot of balls just trying to get as much running as I can do. I guess in a day or two a decision will be made.” "I'm hopeful, but I guess it's up to physios and management to manage the risk of it,” he added. The 23-year-old is even ready to miss the first game so that he can be available for the rest of the four matches. “It's just trying to make sure if I did play this one there's not going to be an issue for the next four if selected,” said Pope. Now that Ben Stokes is not available, the English middle order needs stability and Pope is a key member in consideration for that number five spot.

New Zealand Cricket confirms player availability for IPL’s UAE leg

The New Zealand Cricket CEO David White confirmed that its players would be available for the second leg of the Indian Premier League which is scheduled to take place from September 19 in the United Arab Emirates. "New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson, Trent Boult, James Neesham, and Lockie Ferguson will feature in the second phase of the IPL 2021 in the UAE," White was quoted as saying by Pakistani media house Geo. The IPL, which began in April this year was initially suspended after a lot of cases of Covid-19 broke out in the team bio-bubbles and later on it was postponed after the first 29 games that had taken place by May 4. After this announcement, a franchise owner was relieved as otherwise, they would have been looking halter skelter to find replacements for the foreign stars. “We are much relieved now. BCCI are in talks with English and Australian boards to come to a consensus regarding this. Given April and May are earmarked for the IPL, they are right to raise their own objections, but we are now confirmed to witness New Zealand players in action,” the official was quoted as saying to cricket.com Although New Zealand Cricket might have agreed, England Wales Cricket Board have made it pretty clear that their players won’t be participating in the second leg, so it is now down to Cricket Australi and how it would respond to players’ availability. These three nations along with the West Indies supply the largest chunk of foreign players and support staff in the IPL.

Bangladesh coach Domingo miffed with Cricket Australia over Mushfqiur Rahim bubble fiasco

Mushfiqur Rahim, one of Bangladesh’s key players going into the T20 World Cup in November this year, has been not allowed to enter the team bubble for Tigers’ five math T20I series against Australia at home. Rahim skipped the white-ball segment of the Zimbabwe tour to be with his ailing father and also to make sure that he is able to enter into the team bubble. But as things stand, Australia refused his entry saying that he did not have the mandatory qualifications. This did not go down well with the Bangladeshi coach Russell Domingo who termed the Australian behaviour as disappointing. "I can't understand the stringent rules Australia placed on Mushfiqur's bubble. I think 10 days would have surely been enough. It's very disappointing the way they went about it," Domingo was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz. “Mushfiqur is surely a loss for us but we have got a big squad and some quality players to replace him,” he added. The 46 year was also upbeat about facing the Australian pace bowling which includes accomplished men like Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. "Mitchell Starc and Hazlewood are quality bowlers and we have looked at some of their footage. But at the end of the day, you will play the ball not the man. End of the day they are humans and will bowl some bad balls," said the South African. Bangladesh will be going into the series without the services of regular openers Tamim Iqbal and Liton Das and even that does not make Domingo fear for anything as he openly claimed that Bangladesh is playing this series to win it. “We are not coming up just to compete. We want to make sure we give Australia a good go and at the end of the day we are going to try and win the series," he said. Till now, the teams have played each other four times and all four have been one of the meetings in the World Cup and hence this would be the first-ever bilateral T20I series between the two teams. Bangladesh would be looking to register their first-ever win against the mighty Kangaroos when they face them in the five-match series starting with the first match scheduled for August 3 at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka.
