PSL Eliminator 2 | Abdullah Shafique fightback helps Lahore post defendable total

Lahore Qalandars were off to one of their worst starts of the season after being two down for just seven runs in the first three overs. Islamabad United’s Liam Dawson ruined Lahore’s party running riot through the top order dismissing the ever-dependable Fakhar Zaman for just one run. The English off spinner used the skidding new ball to beat Zaman for pace on the cut and then later brought one into Philip Salt castling his stumps.

Dawson’s tight lines were complimented by pacer Athar Mahmood’s hard lengths in the powerplay and the duo managed to keep Lahore at check for the larger part of the first six overs. The team would have hoped to capitalise on the same, but the introduction of Abdullah Shafique seemed to be like a breath of fresh air as the right hander counterattacked his way through trouble.

A rapid half century in just 25 balls meant that Lahore were back on their feet and were able to score 82 in the first 10 overs, a big improvement from 9/2 at three.

Just as Lahore would have hoped to ramp off that fightback, two back to back wickets of Shafique and young Harry Brooks put them under the spot. If it were not for the poor fielding efforts of Islamabad United, Lahore would have been put under the spot much earlier than they actually were.

A struggling innings from Samit Patel (21 off 18) and Mohammad Hafeez (28 off 28) ended up further denting but a late onslaught from David Weise made sure that the home team were still afloat in their aspirations to enter the final game.

He accumulated 27 runs off Waqas Maqsood’s final over single handedly to shift the momentum of the game.

For Islamabad, Dawson was the cream of the crop, picking two wickets for 24 while Mohammad Wasim Jr picked 2 from his three overs bowled.

BAN vs AFG | Tigers win ODI series after routing Afghanistan by 88 runs

Afghanistan’s fate in the ODI series was sealed after they lost a do-or-die game against Bangladesh on Friday, 25 February. An 88-run victory for the Bangla Tigers means that they now have an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series and have completely stamped their authority against Afghanistan. While the bowling department carried its stupendous form from the last game, today, it was the exceptional batting performance that stood out - something that is not said on a daily basis in reference to the Bangladesh side. Liton Das’ century along with Mushfiqur Rahim’s 86 off 93 balls paved the way for a huge score that more or less sealed the deal for the home side in the first innings itself. Liton’s 136 off 126 balls had 16 boundaries and 2 sixes to his name, as the player looked to get back in form after his horrendous run at the World T20 tournament last year. His 202-run stand alongside Rahim took Bangladesh to a massive total of 306 runs for the loss of four wickets. Returning to defend the match, Bangladesh scalped three wickets in the first 10 overs of the game sending Riaz Hassan, captain Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai back in the hut. The home team and their mastery over the conditions made life very difficult for the Afghan batters as they kept collapsing in desperation to score runs. Credit must be given to Rahmat Shah who did well to fend off the initial blast but ended up succumbing to Taskin Ahmed against his return spell in the 25th over. Ahmed’s nip-backer went through Shah’s defence to clip the off stump bail and effect another collapse of the batting line-up. The visitors once again lost three wickets in a bunch to effectively wipe out their middle order and put themselves in an awful position by the end of 32 overs. Panic set in thereafter and looking for runs and a rapid rate, Afghanistan subsequently lost Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan in a space of three overs. While Nabi (32 off 38) skied a loopy Mehidy Hasan delivery trying to look for a big shot, Rashid was clean bowled by a classic Mustafizur Rahman off cutter. With more than 100 runs required and two wickets remaining it was just a matter of time before this got wrapped up and it did in the first ball of the 46th over as Afif Hossain dismissed Fazalhaq Farroqui in his first ball of the match. Liton Das was judged the man of the match for obvious reasons and Tamim Iqbal heaped praises on his batters. He acknowledged his bowlers for being fantastic through the two ODIs but stated that Bangladesh need to finish strong after getting such a brilliant partnership in the middle. The series is now a dead rubber and Bangladesh would like to experiment for the last game on 28 February, before moving on to the T20I format - their worst in the recent times ahead of the T20 World Cup in Australia.

BCCI not happy with Saha’s comments about Rahul Dravid

The bosses at Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are apparently not happy with Wriddhiman Saha outburst in the media. Saha’s emotional outburst came after he was snubbed from the Test team for the upcoming Sri Lanka series. Speaking to news agency PTI on Friday, 25 February, BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal stated that the board might ask for an explanation from the veteran keeper due to his remarks against Rahul Dravid. BCCI contracted cricketers are not allowed to reveal details about the selection process due to clause 6.3 of the player’s contract, and BCCI considers that they can hold Saha liable for a violation over his comments made about coach Rahul Dravid. Saha was allegedly told that he was not in consideration for the wicketkeeper’s position in the national team, something that came as a shock to him. The 37-year-old has vouched that he had had conversations with president Sourav Ganguly and the latter had vouched that Saha’s position is not under threat in the Test team. According to Dhumal, the president of the BCCI had tried to keep the player’s morale up and Saha should not have made the matters of selection public in the national media. “Yes, there is a possibility that BCCI could ask Wriddhiman as to how he spoke on selection matters being a centrally contracted cricketer,” Dhumal confirmed. At the moment it is not known if BCCI would ask for a written or verbal response from Saha, but sources privy to the matter disclosed to PTI that the people at the top are not happy with his behaviour. Saha played his last in the Test series against New Zealand where he scored a fighting half century to help India survive from a precarious position in the second innings.
