Paul Stirling set for PSL return, available for tonight’s selection

Paul Stirling is set to return to Pakistan Super League as he is available for tonight’s Eliminator 2 against Lahore Qalandars. A relaxation of Covid regulation makes it possible for the Irish player immediately eligible to compete upon arrival in Pakistan.

Paul Stirling has rejoined his PSL franchise, Islamabad United after returning from a negative PCR Test. He is all set to become the second high-profile surprise return for the same team in just two days in PSL.

Due to PCB's Covid-19 policy Alex Hales could return for Thursday's win over Peshawar Zalmi in Eliminator 1. Now thanks to the same tweaked rule, Stirling can immediately compete in the league. Before the amendment, anyone arriving from outside Pakistan would have had to quarantine for three days before being allowed to play.

Stirling had to leave for international duty after playing the first five games of the tournament. He took part in a T20 quadrangular series in Oman and then in the T20 World Cup qualifiers before emerging as one of the most destructive opening pairs with Hales in the first leg of the Pakistan Super League.

The England batter had cited the mental fatigue of bio-bubbles as the reason for early departure. On his return, he won the Eliminator against Peshawar Zalmi for United with his player-of-the-match performance.

Likewise, Stirling is expected to follow the same protocols as he will be kept apart from the team as much as possible. He will be staying in a separate room, travelling in a separate car, and will not have access to the team’s dressing room.

BCCI not happy with Saha’s comments about Rahul Dravid

The bosses at Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are apparently not happy with Wriddhiman Saha outburst in the media. Saha’s emotional outburst came after he was snubbed from the Test team for the upcoming Sri Lanka series. Speaking to news agency PTI on Friday, 25 February, BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal stated that the board might ask for an explanation from the veteran keeper due to his remarks against Rahul Dravid. BCCI contracted cricketers are not allowed to reveal details about the selection process due to clause 6.3 of the player’s contract, and BCCI considers that they can hold Saha liable for a violation over his comments made about coach Rahul Dravid. Saha was allegedly told that he was not in consideration for the wicketkeeper’s position in the national team, something that came as a shock to him. The 37-year-old has vouched that he had had conversations with president Sourav Ganguly and the latter had vouched that Saha’s position is not under threat in the Test team. According to Dhumal, the president of the BCCI had tried to keep the player’s morale up and Saha should not have made the matters of selection public in the national media. “Yes, there is a possibility that BCCI could ask Wriddhiman as to how he spoke on selection matters being a centrally contracted cricketer,” Dhumal confirmed. At the moment it is not known if BCCI would ask for a written or verbal response from Saha, but sources privy to the matter disclosed to PTI that the people at the top are not happy with his behaviour. Saha played his last in the Test series against New Zealand where he scored a fighting half century to help India survive from a precarious position in the second innings.

IND vs SL | Sri Lanka announce squad for Test series against India

Sri Lanka have announced the squad for the upcoming Test series against India. The side would be led by Dimuth Karunaratne while Dhananjaya de Silva will be his deputy. Kusal Mendis’ availability depends on fitness and Ramesh Mendis will not be a part of the team due to injury. Apart from this Niroshan Dickwella and Dhananjaya de Silva have been drafted into the T20I squad in place of injured Kusal Mendis and Maheesh Theekshana. “In the meantime, Niroshan Dickwella and Dhananjaya De Silva have been drafted into the T20I squad in place of injured Kusal Mendis and Maheesh Theekshana,” a release from SLC said. “Both Mendis and Theekshana suffered hamstring injuries during the 5th T20I vs Australia.” “Maheesh Theekshana will return home, whilst Wanindu Hasaranga also will return home from Australia,” it added. India and Sri Lanka are slated to play a two-match Test series which will begin on March 4, 2022 in Mohali. The second clash will be held in Bengaluru from March 12, 2022. Sri Lanka as a unit have been on a roll in recent times, steamrolling over opposition teams in their home conditions that have massively supported spin bowling. Lasith Embuldeniya for example has enjoyed an exceptional season in the run-up to the India series, routing oppositions at home. However, Lanka will be met with a completely different set of conditions in Mohali, Punjab - a ground that traditionally supports movement in the first hour of the day. This series will have large implications for Sri Lanka as they are currently at the top of the World Test Championship table. SQUAD: Dimuth Karunaratne (Captain), Pathum Nissanka, Lahiru Thirimanne, Dhananjaya de Silva (Vice-Captain), Kusal Mendis (subject to fitness), Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal, Charith Asalanka, Niroshan Dickwella, Chamika Karunaratne, Lahiru Kumara, Suranga Lakmal, Dushmantha Chameera, Vishwa Fernando, Jeffrey Vandersay, Praveen Jayawickrema, Lasith Embuldeniya

Explained | How the new 10-team IPL format works

The dates for the Indian Premier League are all but official, with reports flying in the Indian media that the coveted tournament will begin on March 26, 2022. A 10-team affair this season, IPL will take a different route than usual dividing the teams into two groups. The IPL media advisory suggests that each team will play the same number of matches (14) as it did in the earlier editions of the group stage. This got netizens scratching their heads as to how it was possible, and what could possibly be the format of this edition. While it is not rocket science, IPL has come up with a little complex method for its 2022 edition to accommodate the league in just 74 matches, spread across two months. Here is a step by step guideline of how the format works 10 teams are divided into 2 groups of five. For example, the first group might house MI, KKR, RR, DC and LSG, while the other one will have the remaining 5 - CSK, SRH, RCB, PBKS, GT. Teams will play 2 games against opponents of their own group. Play 2 games against one opponent of the other group and then play 1 game against the remaining 4 opponents in the other group. Teams will play 14 games in their group stage before moving into the playoffs. The league phase will have 70 games and playoffs will have 4 games. While the format is not ideal and one would like the teams to play each other twice before heading into the playoffs phase of the tournament, this does allow the IPL to make the best of the window granted in the ICC FTP calendar. The tournament is scheduled to begin on Saturday, 26 March and will run till May 29. Maharashtra will host majority part of the tournament, with 70 matches divided in four of its stadiums - DY Patil, Wankhede, Brabourne and MCA Stadium in Pune. The venue for the playoffs phase has not been decided yet, but if situation permits, the final phase of the tournament could possibly be shifted to Ahmedabad. The 2022 edition will be a big one for IPL. It is being speculated that the fans have seen the last of mega-auctions and IPL might ask their respective franchises to shift to a self-sustaining model while keeping the smaller auctions alive.

IPL 2022 to have 70 league matches across four venues

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that the Indian Premier League will have 70 league games that will be played across four venues in Mumbai and Pune. The venues for the playoffs will be decided later on. It was already speculated that the tournament will start on March 26, Saturday, which will give the broadcasters a favourable window to begin the tournament with a double-header on the second day. The governing body has confirmed the same and finalised the date for the final as well. Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium will host 20 matches while 15 matches will take place at CCI. The DY Patil Stadium will have 20 games and 15 clashes will be held in Pune’s MCA International Stadium. “The IPL Governing Council at its meeting held yesterday made the following key decisions regarding the TATA IPL 2022 Season. The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League will be played in a bio-secure environment at a single hub to avoid air travel which is considered as a major threat for the spread of COVID-19 infection, thereby affecting the players and the League/matches,” an official release from IPL read. “The tournament will kickstart from 26th March, 2022 and the final will be played on 29th May, 2022. A total of 70 league matches will be played across four international standard venues in Mumbai and Pune. The venue for the playoff matches will be decided later,” it added. The 10 teams have been divided into two groups and each team will play 14 games in the group stage. The breakdown is such that each team will play two games against opponents of their own group and play 2 games against one opponent in the other group. This will make 10 matches in total and for the rest 4 matches, they will square off once against the last 4 teams of the other group. “Each team will play twice with the teams in their group and with the team in the same row in the second group. With the rest of the teams in the second group, they will play only once during the season.”
