PSL 2022 | Lahore Qalandars vs Islamabad United | Eliminator 2 Match Preview, Probable XI, Pitch Report

The 2nd finalist of the 7th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) will be decided on Friday, February 24, when Shaheen Afridi’s Lahore Qalandars take on the Shadab Khan-led Islamabad United in Eliminator 02 at the Gaddafi Stadium.

Having lost the first Qualifier to defending champions Multan Sultans, tonight's game will be the last opportunity for Lahore Qalandars to claim the finals berth.

They were well beaten by Multan in Qualfier 01 and once again, it was their batting that paved the way for their demise. The signs were ominous in the last game itself where they had to depend on a tailender like Shaheen Afridi to swing the bat in a 158-run chase.

In Qualifier 01, the target was 164, and while Fakhar Zaman scored a 45-ball 63, and Kamran Ghulam chipped in with a 17-ball 20, the rest of the batting simply didn't show up.

Shaheen Afridi had a poor game, as did Zaman Khan. The duo bowled seven wicketless overs between them, conceding 65, which, in the context of the game, was a lot.

The skipper will have to up his game on Friday and he'd hope that some of his batsmen, especially Mohammed Hafeez, turns up to the party.

It won't be easy though as they will be up against a confident Islamabad United, who will come into this game after having eliminated Peshawar Zalmi.

And, they did it the hard way. Chasing has proved to be extremely difficult in the second half of the tournament but Islamabad, on Thursday, showed that it's not impossible.

Riding on Alex Hales' 49-ball 62 and excellent cameos from Azam Khan (28 off 22), Shadab (22 off 17),  Faheem Ashraf (19* off 13) and Liam Dawson (10* off 2), United chased down 170 In the last over.

Earlier, Hasan Ali was the star with the ball as he claimed three wickets, which included the dangerous-looking Shoaib Malik, while giving away just 30 runs.

Lahore Qalandars prevailed (by 66 runs and 8 runs) in their two group-stage meetings this season. Will they make a hat-trick on Friday or will Islamabad avenge those defeats and book their place in the final?

PSL 2022 | Islamabad United hold nerves to clinch win & stay alive in competition

In an exciting first eliminator clash between Islamabad United and Peshawar Zalmi in the PSL 2022, the Islamabad side showed nerves of steel and stole away a win to stay alive in the competition and make a place for themselves in the second eliminator. Chasing a target of 170 in 20 overs, the United side rode on a fine piece of batting from Alex Hales first and then Azam Khan who chipped in with crucial runs. Hales scored 62 off 49 while Azam struck a 22-ball 28. The United team needed 10 off the final over with Azam on strike and Howell with the ball in his hands. The bowler trapped Khan in front of the stumps on the very first delivery bringing down the equation to 10 required off 5 deliveries. Liam Dawson then walked out to bat in the middle and he finished off the game in style hitting a maximum on the second ball and following it with a boundary on the third of the over. Islamabad United won by 5 wickets and three balls to spare. Salman Irshad was the pick of the bowlers for Zalmi as he troubled the batters with his Yorkers and scalped three wickets for 31 runs in 4 overs. Earlier, in the day, Kamran Akmal and Shoaib Malik showed their experience and notched up individual fifties to help the side put 169/5 on the board in 20 overs. Hasan Ali bagged a three-for for 30 runs in 4 overs. Islamabad will now play Lahore Qalandars in the second eliminator on Friday in Lahore and the winner of this game will lock horns with Multan Sultans in the final at the same venue on Sunday.

IND vs SL | 1st T20: Ishan Kishan, bowlers give India comprehensive win against Sri Lanka

An emphatic all-round show from India handed them a comprehensive win in the first T20I against Sri Lanka by 62 runs in Lucknow. Chasing a mammoth target of 200 runs in 20 overs, the Lankan side was restricted to 137/6. The visitors had a dismal start to the chase as they lost Pathum Nissanka for a first-ball zero. He was removed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The Sri Lankan side continued to lose wickets at regular intervals and were reduced to 97/6 in the 16th over. It was only Charith Asalanka who showed some resistance and compiled a fifty during the course while Dushmantha Chameera chipped in with a quick-fire 24* off 14 but couldn’t take the team over the line. Yuzvendra Chahal was the pick of the bowlers after he returned with figures of 1/11 in three overs. Apart from him, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Venkatesh Iyer scalped a couple of wickets each while Ravindra Jadeja also picked up one. Earlier, in the day, the Indian batting unit was on roll after Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan provided them with a solid stand of 111 runs for the first wicket and later Shreyas Iyer got into the act to help the side out up a big total. Ishan eventually scored 89 off 56. On the other side, Iyer remained unbeaten at 57 off 28 as the hosts posted 199/2 in 20 overs. “Once I got going, I wanted to play my shots and keep the intent going, just wanted to play my shots. He (Ishan Kishan) wasn't able to time (in the middle overs), was losing patience. I just told him to take his time, look for twos and threes,” Iyer said after the match.
