An international cricketer from Papua New Guinea, Kiplin Doriga, has been sentenced to three years in prison for a robbery in Jersey. The 30-year-old wicketkeeper was on the island for a cricket tournament when he assaulted a woman and stole her phone in St Helier on August 25th.
Why was Kiplin Doriga arrested?
The attack happened early in the morning as Doriga was going back to his hotel. He punched the woman, causing her to fall, and took her mobile phone. He was arrested the same day. Doriga quickly pleaded guilty to the charge, leading to his recent sentencing in Jersey's Royal Court.
Detective Sergeant Jim McGranahan of the States of Jersey Police praised the rapid investigation that led to a sentence after three months of the incident.
"This was a fast-paced investigation with an unknown suspect who had only been on the island a matter of days. Due to the nature of the allegation, which was a stranger assault on a lone female at night, the Police dedicated a number of detectives and other assets who quickly identified Doriga, arrested him and recovered stolen property. We will continue to combat violence against women and girls and prioritise the safety of islanders," Jim said.
At the time of the incident, Kiplin Doriga had already played in tournament matches for his country but was not granted bail after he pleaded guilty in the court of law.
The 30-year-old has 39 ODIs and 43 T20I caps under his name. Although he has 730 runs in ODIs at an average of 20.27, his T20I stats are underwhelming, with only an average of 12.37 and a career run of 359.
Will Doriga be allowed to play after jail time?
The PNG cricket association is yet to make any statement on the cricketer's jail terms. Speaking of any ban implications after Kiplin's sentence, ICC's Code of Conduct does not explicitly refer to his offence but extends to general on-field and off-field behaviour.
As per the code, a player serving a jail sentence would likely be found in breach of Article 2.21 for "conduct that brings the game into disrepute." Hence, Kiplin getting banned from the game still remains a question of probability.
