South Africa have ended a 27-year-long wait for an ICC trophy, defeating Australia by five wickets in a gripping World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 Final at Lord’s. Chasing 282 in the fourth innings on a pitch offering consistent movement and bounce, it was Aiden Markram who stood tall with a sublime 136, guiding the Proteas to their first major ICC title since the 1998 Champions Trophy.

While the WTC Final represents the pinnacle of Test cricket, it also serves as a platform for individual brilliance. Since its inception, three players have been named Player of the Match in what is arguably the most intense Test fixture of each cycle.

Here’s a look at the list of Player of the Match (POTM) winners across all three WTC finals.

WTC 2019–21 Final: Kyle Jamieson (New Zealand)

In the inaugural WTC Final, New Zealand outclassed India in fiercely contested match in Southampton. The standout performer was Kiwi pacer Kyle Jamieson, who bagged 5/31 in the first innings and added 2 more wickets in the second, finishing with match figures of 7/61.

WTC 2021–23 Final: Travis Head (Australia)

Australia lifted their maiden WTC title after defeating India in the 2023 final.  Australia's star batter Travis Head, was the man to watch out for. He turned the tide in Aussies favour with a blistering 163 runs off 174 balls. He shared a mammoth 285-run partnership with Steve Smith to take things away from India. 

WTC 2023–25 Final: Aiden Markram (South Africa)

In what was arguably the most dramatic WTC final to date, SA pulled off a stunning fourth-innings chase of 282 runs, led by a career-defining knock from Aiden Markram. Walking in at a tense moment, Markram held his nerve and played one of the finest innings in the history of South African Test cricket.
