English wicketkeeper Phil Salt continues to make steady rise in international cricket, as the 27-year-old just rose to number two spot on the latest ICC rankings for T20I batsmen. The Lancashire star recently bludgeoned 331 runs across just five innings in West Indies to return with a ‘Player of the Series’ award for his country.

In the latest rankings for T20I batters issued by the ICC, Salt propelled himself past Pakistan veteran Mohammad Rizwan, and is currently only trailing behind India’s 20-overs legend Suryakumar Yadav.

Phil Salt climbs to number 2 on ICC rankings

Phil Salt, owing to his splendid run with the bat for England in their five-match T20I series in West Indies, climbed to number two spot on the latest ICC T20I batting rankings.

His 331-run tally across five matches featured successive match-winning hundreds against the hosts at St George's and Tarouba to enforce a series-decider at the latter of the two venues on December 21. While the explosive right-handed batter belted another 38 in the series finale, the Englishmen fell short of West Indies in a one-sided run-chase later in the game to lose their five-match rubber by a 2-3 margin.

Regardless of the team’s outcome, Phil Salt is currently clubbed between Mohammad Rizwan and number one batter Suryakumar Yadav on the prestigious ICC rankings for T20I batsmen. The cricketer, placed at number two with 802 rating points, is trailing Suryakumar (887) by a staggering margin of 85 points.

Notably, Phil Salt found no buyers at the recently-concluded IPL 2024 auction in the UAE on December 19, despite listing a match-winning 119 against West Indies in Tarouba on the same day. The cricketer expressed his disappointment the following morning, describing his snub as “confusing” while speaking with the reporters.

Salt made his IPL debut through Delhi Capitals in 2023, and ended up playing nine matches in his maiden stint to score 218 runs at an average of 27.25. The cricketer was released by the franchise later in the year, ahead of the IPL 2024 auction.
