PAK-W vs SRI-W | Chamari Athapaththu's all-round display helps SL-W thump Pakistan in the 3rd ODI

Chamari Athapaththu's all-round display (101 & 2-20) has helped Sri Lanka women cap off what's been a disastrous tour for the Islanders with a consolation 93-run win over Pakistan women at the National Stadium in Karachi on Sunday evening.

Having comprehensively lost each of their first five fixtures on the tour (3 T20Is + 2 ODIs), it looked like Pakistan would seal yet another series whitewash after Anam Amin reduced Sri Lanka to 4/2 after two overs.

However, a sensational, belligerent 6th ODI hundred by the legendary Athapaththu came to Lanka's rescue.

Athapaththu was at her imperious best on Sunday afternoon as she smacked a brutal 85-ball 101, an innings punctuated with 13 fours and a six.

She got ideal support from Harshitha Madavi- 75 off 128 deliveries- and together, they took Lanka from a desperate situation of 4/2 to 156/2 in the next 29 overs.

The 152-run-stand was finally broken by Nida Dar after she got Athapaththu stumped. However, Harshitha continued to go from strength to strength and aided by handy contributions from Kavisha Dilhari (28 off 44) and Nilakshi De Silva, who racked up a rapid 18-ball 24*, helped Lanka post 260/7 in 50.

For Pakistan, Anam Amin (2/43 in 10) and Nida Dar (1/39 in 9) were the pick of the bowlers while Fatima Sana (2/51 in 8) also chipped in with a couple.

Athapththu was at it again with the ball as she not only ran out opener Muneeba Ali (16 off 23) but also knocked over the in-form Sidra Ameen for a 19-ball 24 and Nida Dar for an 8-ball 5 to leave Pakistan reeling at 4-48, with Oshadi Ranasinghe backing up with the dismissal of skipper Bismah Mahroof for a six-ball duck.

Omaima Sohail (40 off 61) and Aliya Riaz (56 off 82) tried to resurrect the ship with a 64-run-stand but it proved to be less than inadequate as the home side eventually folded for 167 in 41.4 overs.

Athapaththu was adjudged the 'Player of the Match' for her all-round performance, while Sidra was named 'Player of the series'.

Brief Score:

Sri Lanka Women - 260/7 (50 overs)

Chamari Athapaththu 101(85), Harshitha Madavi 75(128);

Anam Amin (2/43 in 10 overs)

Pakistan Women - 167/10 (41.4)

Aliya Riaz 56(82), Omaima Sohail 40(61);

Chamari Athapaththu (2/20 in 6 overs)

Sri Lanka Women won by 93 runs.

Josh Hazlewood recalls the time he wasn’t considered a bowler for T20 format

Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood talked about his white-ball cricket experience and how things had gone from strength to strength for him ahead of the T20I series against Sri Lanka. Hazlewood was Australia's lead pacer in T20Is during the 2021-22 season as he has taken the most wickets amongst fast bowlers, with 31 wickets at an average of 14.22 in 18 matches, and an economy of 6.61. But once there was a time when he was not considered a bowler for the shortest form of the game. Recalling those days, Hazlewood said he made a conscious effort to get back into T20 cricket, realizing that there were a couple of world events lined up. "I could see a couple of World Cups coming up in T20 cricket and wanted to poke my nose back in at the IPL, so I jumped in for the Sixers," Hazlewood told cricket.com.au. "It was probably that period when I made a conscious effort to get back into T20. It was so hard before that with logistical issues, tours were overlapping, and you had to pick and choose what you wanted to play for Australia. Took that opportunity to play the Big Bash, and that led to playing for Chennai (Chennai Super Kings) and I ended up playing more and more games as time went on, then here we are," he added. "It's a strange one, I guess. I've obviously missed a fair bit of red-ball cricket through injury and selection so, a little bit disappointing in that regard. Then the white-ball, T20 in particular, has gone strength to strength. That's the benefit of having three formats in this sport. If you are struggling in one, or not going particularly well, then you can rely on another one to come through," Hazelwood further stated. With a big tour of Sri Lanka starting this month, the New South Wales cricketer spoke about the possibility of Australia going with one less pace bowling option against Sri Lanka in the upcoming T20I, ODI, and Test series as conditions are different in the Asian subcontinent. "We're lucky to have Cam Green (Cameron Green) there to cover a lot of bases and obviously you need airspeed on those wickets to have an impact." The right-arm Aussie quick also explained how the difference between the trio of him, Pat Cummins, and Mitchell Starc helps in the outcome of a Test match and the whole series. "But I think just that blend of all three of us (being) a little bit different really helps throughout a Test match and throughout a Test series," Hazlewood concluded. Hazlewood will be seen in action in the upcoming three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka starting on June 7 in Colombo.

'When you need them to score runs, they all get out': Kapil Dev comes down hard at Rohit, Virat & Rahul

One of the finest all-rounders of his generation, Kapil Dev, came hard on Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul ahead of India's upcoming five-T20I series against South Africa, starting from June 9 in Delhi. \ Rahul will be leading the Indian team without their regular skipper Rohit, who had been rested following a two-month-long 2022 season of Indian Premier League (IPL). Both India captain Virat and Rohit struggled for runs in the recently concluded season of IPL. While Rohit failed to score even one half-century in the tournament, finishing the season with just 268 runs in 14 games at an average of 19.14, Kohli, too, endured a disappointing season as he could manage only 341 runs in 16 matches at an average of 22.73. KL Rahul, on the other hand, was terrific with the bat for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), having amassed 616 runs with two centuries from 15 matches. However, his strike rate in some games, including the eliminator against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), drew a lot of criticism from the cricket fraternity. The 1983 World Cup-winning captain reckoned that the trio of Rohit, Virat and Rahul shouldn't feel the pressure and play fearlessly as all of them can strike 150-160 regularly. "They have a big reputation and there's huge pressure on them, which shouldn't be the case. You have to play fearless cricket. All of these are players who can hit at a strike rate of 150-160. When you need them to score runs, they all get out. When it is time to take off (in the innings), they are out. And that adds to pressure. Either you play an anchor or you play striker," Kapil Dev said on YouTube channel ‘Uncut’. Further speaking on the T20 approach of Rahul, the former India captain said that there needs to be a role clarification, adding that a big reputation of a player is of no use if he fails to deliver good performance for the team. "When you talk about KL Rahul, if the team tells him to play the entire 20 overs and you come back with a score of, say 60 not out, you're not doing justice to your team," Kapil added. "I think the approach needs to change. And if it doesn't, you have to change the players. A big player is expected to make a big impact. Having a big reputation is not enough, you also have to deliver great performances," he concluded.
