#OTD in 2017: Pakistan overwhelmed India to win their first ICC ODI event since 1992

On this day in 2017, Pakistan secured a victory by 180 runs against India to lift the Champions Trophy at The Oval. This was their first ICC trophy in the 50-overs format since winning the 1992 World Cup.

Both the teams had faced each other in the group stages before and India had won by 124 runs. The men in blue were the clear favorites to defend the Champions Trophy title as well.

India had beaten Bangladesh by nine wickets, while Pakistan dominated England by eight wickets to reach the finals of the tournament.

The Virat Kohli-led side opted to bowl first, and follow the same template of the group game. The openers Azhar Ali and Fakhar Zaman started in a cautious manner.

Zaman earned a reprieve in the no-ball delivered by Bumrah in the fourth over, which was caught by Dhoni.

It was certainly his day, as he started to manufacture quality shots off the pacers and charged towards the spinners to hit boundaries in an emphatic manner. Azhar was impressive as well to support his cause and the duo added 100 runs for the first wicket in 18 overs.

It was the 23rd over, when Azhar tried to take a quick single, and was involved in a confusion with Zaman, and was run-out for a well-made 59 off 71 balls. His dismissal invited Babar Azam at the crease.

Zaman continued his aggression and reached triple figures for the first time in ODI cricket in the 31st over.

A couple of overs later, Hardik Pandya dismissed Zaman who was caught out to Jadeja at point, because of a mistimed shot. Babar Azam’s contribution of 46 and Mohammad Hafeez’s contribution of 57 off 37 balls paved the way for Pakistan posting 338 on the board.

Chasing a big total on the board, India had a disappointing start with Rohit Sharma (0) trapped in front and soon Virat Kohli (5) getting holed with a thick leading edge to point.

Shikhar Dhawan (21) started well and picked up four boundaries, but Amir was accurate with his length and he managed to induce an edge from the southpaw to wicket-keeper Sarfaraz Khan in the ninth over.

In his first over of the match, Shadab Khan delivered a perfect leg spin delivery, which caught Yuvraj Singh (22) plumb in front of the stumps. In the next over, MS Dhoni (4) played a loose shot and holed out to Imad Wasim in the deep mid-on region off Hasan Ali.

Soon Kedar Jadhav became a victim of Shadab (9) in the 17th over, and India were left reeling at 72/6.

The partnership of Jadeja and Pandya started to grow, and caused problems for the opposition, with the latter acting as the key aggressor.

In the 23rd over of the innings, Pandya was at his absolute best and he managed to hit three sixes on the trot, and also hit a four in a single over off Shadab. The all-rounder managed to bring up his fifty off 32 deliveries.

In the 26th over, Pandya made full use of the bonus over of Zaman to hit him for two sixes. However, the 28-year-old was caught in a mix-up, which ended his whirlwind knock of 76 off 43 balls.

Few overs later, Jadeja (16) also perished, and remaining three wickets fell in quick succession as well, and India were dismissed for a score of 158.

Hasan Ali was adjudged as ‘Player of the Tournament’ with 13 wickets.
