#OTD in 1999: India knocked out England from World Cup on their home soil

On this day, India secured a 63-run victory over England and knocked them out of the 1999 World Cup in Birmingham.

Ahead of this fixture, England had three wins in four league matches, and India had two wins in the same appearances as their opponents. However, both the teams needed a win to cruise through the Super-Six stage, with the home team having a bad net run rate as well.

Alec Stewart-led side invited Team India to bat first in overcast conditions. The openers Sourav Ganguly and Sadagoppan Ramesh provided a decent start to the team.

It was a terrific good length ball of Alan Mullally, which caught the edge of Ramesh (20) in the 13th over of the innings. Thereafter the duo of Ganguly and Dravid continued their fine form and scored boundaries in almost every over.

The unfortunate run-out of Ganguly (40) of Mark Ealham came in the 22nd over, and India were at 93/2. After that, however, the home team put pressure on Sachin Tendulkar and denied him boundaries with terrific fielding efforts.

Although Tendulkar started to get going, he was caught at the deep mid-wicket area off Ealham and could contribute 22 off 40 balls.

The pressure kept mounting on the in-form Dravid as well, as the all-rounder Flintoff dismissed him for 53 off 82 balls. Soon the captain Mohammad Azharuddin (26) was caught at the point as well.

Then, the team needed a flourish from Ajay Jadeja to post a respectable total on the board. He performed as expected and hit delightful boundaries to contribute 39 off 30 balls, which propelled India to 232.

In reply, England lost their captain Alec Stewart (2) in the fourth over, wherein he tried to drive the ball from Debasis Mohanty, but the thick edge was caught at the second slip.

In the subsequent delivery, Mohanty bowled in the area of uncertainty and brought Graeme Hick (0) in double mind, resulting in the batter chopping the ball onto the stumps.

Nasser Hussain and Graham Thorpe steered the team well and controlled the game proceedings. However, another chop-on dismissal from Hussain (33) off Ganguly in the 20th over initiated a collapse of the home team.

The rain brought an early close in the evening, and the play resumed on the next day, with England at 73/3.

In the 24th over, Thorpe was adjudged LBW off Javagal Srinath for 36 off 57 balls.

Anil Kumble bowled a floater to dismiss Flintoff (15) LBW in the 32nd over. Thereafter India kept picking wickets, and a toe cruising yorker from Srinath took the final wicket to end England's innings for 169.

Sourav Ganguly was named 'Player of the Match' for his contribution of 40 runs and three wickets.

This big win meant India improved their net run rate and sealed the Super-six spot. It was a complete turnaround from them to get three consecutive wins after losing to South Africa and Zimbabwe. On the other hand, England were knocked out of the competition.

Ollie Robinson suffers yet another blow, tests positive for Covid-19

England seamer Ollie Robinson made an immediate impact at the international level after making his debut for England last summer as he picked 39 wickets from his first nine tests at a terrific average of 21.28 and a stunning strike rate of 48.41. The talented fast bowler was able to dismantle the powerful batting units, including India, New Zealand and Australia, during the course of his first three international assignments. Therefore, the British fans had started seeing him as a potential spearhead of the English pace battery. But unfortunately, things have been rough for the Kent-born seamer since his impressive outings in the Ashes down under. Robinson suffered a back injury that ruled him out of the entire West Indies tour and the initial phase of the County Championship 2022. His misery has now been aggravated after testing positive for Covid-19. For the oblivious, Robinson was set to represent the County 'Select XI' that took the field against the visiting New Zealand team on Thursday in the second warm-up match before the much-anticipated clash of the World Test Championship (WTC) holders with England. This opportunity was crucial for the 28-year-old pacer to prove his fitness and claim a spot in England's Test XI for the Kiwi challenge. But unfortunately, he was ruled out of the match because of some stiffness in his back and was tested covid positive later in the day. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) surfaced the development on Monday through an official statement. The release stated that Robinson's fitness would be re-examined later this week after completing his isolation. "With respect to the lower back symptoms which prevented him from playing in the four-day tour match for the FCC select XI against the New Zealand tourists at Chelmsford last week, he will be assessed after his isolation period later this week. Further information will be confirmed in due course,” the statement read. It will be interesting to see how England responds with the return of the legendary duo of Stuart Broad and James Anderson, in the absence of the likes of Robinson, Mark Wood, Chris Woakes and Jofra Archer.
