MS Dhoni lands in Chennai, Indian bound CSK players likely to leave for UAE on August 13

Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has started his preparations for the second half of the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He landed in Chennai on Tuesday as the yellow brigade set for departure to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) which will host the remainder of the IPL starting next month.

A group of Indian players from the CSK outfit will travel to UAE on 13th August as told by CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan. "Indian players in the team, whoever is available, will travel to UAE on August 13 in all likelihood," Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan was quoted as saying by PTI.

Viswanathan further added that there won’t be any preparatory camp in Chennai for the team before they fly out to UAE for the remainder of the 14th season. The tournament which was originally held in India was brought to an abrupt end after COVID-19 breached through the bio-bubbles and it became almost impossible to continue the tournament.

The second half of the tournament will commence on September 19 with arch-rivals Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings locking horns against each other. The tournament final will be held on October 15. When the tournament came to a standstill earlier this year, CSK was occupying the second spot with 10 points in seven games.

ICC deducts two WTC points from India-England kitty for slow over-rate

The International Cricket Council has deducted two points each from the World test Championship kitty of India and England as blithe teams were found guilty of slow over-rate during the first Test of the five-match series between the two nations, taking place in England. As a result of the deduction and a draw in the Nottingham Test, both the teams now have two points each in the ICC WTC 2021-23 standings heading into the second Test at Lord's. “Apart from the point deduction, hosts England were also fined 40% of their match fee for slow over-rate while Virat Kohli's India were also penalised 40% by match referee Chris Broad,” an ICC press release said. While England have been bolstered by the inclusion of all-rounder Moeen Ali into the squad, they also have a hit back in form of injury to Stuart Broad and Saqib Mahmood has been added as his cover into the squad. As far as India are concerned, Shardul Thakur is injured and is likely to miss the second Test at Lord’s.

Saqib Mahmood called up as Stuart Broad’s injury cover

Lancashire paceman Saqib Mahmood has been called up to the England squad as cover for injured Stuart Broad, who reported discomfort in his right calf and missed the team’s training on Tuesday. This is the second joining in the Test squad after Moeen Ali was earlier called up on Tuesday for the Lord’s Test starting on Thursday, August 12. Whether Broad would be able to play the Lor’s Test, which will also mark his 150th appearance for England in the red-ball format, would be declared after a check-up by the medical team. Mahmood, part of the Oval Invincibles squad in The Hundred had knocked on the doors of the England Test team after an impressive outing in the Cunty season, which was followed up by an impressive showing against Pakistan in a three-match ODI series. The 24-year-old has so far played seven ODIs and nine T20Is for England. Along with Mahmood’s entry into the team, England confirmed that off-spinner Dom Bess will be leaving the squad to join his county side Yorkshire.

Team India to have new coaches; Ravi Shastri, Bharat Arun, R Sridhar to parts ways after World T20

Team India is likely to get a completely revamped team of coaches as the head coach Ravi Shastri, bowling coach Bharat Arun, fielding coach R Sridhar have made up their mind to move on from their coaching role with the national team. As per a report in The Indian Express, Shastri has already informed some office members of the BCCI about his decision to not look for an extension of the current tenure expiring after the completion of the T20 World Cup. The report further suggested that the BCCI too is eager to have fresh faces in Indian backroom departments. Shastri is on the verge of completing his second stint with the India side. First, he was appointed Director of the side in the aftermath of a disastrous Test tour of England in 2014 and the tenure had ended after the end of India’s campaign in the ICC World T20 in 2016. Later, he was appointed as the head coach for the side of the ICC Champions Trophy where India had finished runners up losing the final against Pakistan. The Indian team has emerged as a champion side across the world, winning two-Test series in Australia and reaching the knockout level of all the ICC tournaments they took part in. However, he could not guide India to lift ICC trophies as they lost to New Zealand both in the semi-final of the ICC ODI World Cup in 2019 and the final of the ICC World Test Championship.

England pacer Stuart Broad has suffered a serious injury scare and is doubtful for the remainder of the home Test series against India, The Guardian reported. There has not been any official communication from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) over the nature or extent of Broad’s injury, but the report suggests that the pacer may well have suffered either a calf strain or an achilles tendon problem and was ‘unable to place any weight on his right foot’, the report further said. Broad, a veteran of 149 Tests, was all set to play a marquee 150th Test of his career at Lord’s in the second Test against India starting on August 12. Broad’s injury and likely absence from the side will further complicate matters for the skipper Joe Root and coach Chris Silverwood, who are already scrambling to find a balanced playing XI in the absence of Chris Woakes and Ben Stokes. England have found a genuine pacer to utilise the conditions in England in Ollie Robinson and Mark Wood could walk in into the playing XI at his place for the Lord’s Test. The injury could also have come at a right time for Broad as he has been struggling to find wicket-taking spells he has been known for.
