Former Pakistan cricketer and captain Mohammad Hafeez, who has been one of the crucial members of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) holding a position in the technical committee, has stepped down with immediate effect, a night before the official squad of the World Cup 2023 was set to be announced.

This news not only comes as a shock but also ignites certain speculations regarding his relationship with Pakistan skipper Babar Azam and PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf.

Hafeez confirmed the news through his social media account on Twitter (Now X), where he thanked Chairman Ashraf for his support and mentioned that he is available in the future if they require his suggestions.

"I decided to leave Pakistan cricket technical committee. I served as honorary member. I would like to thank Zaka Ashraf sb for giving me this opportunity. I m always available whenever Zaka Ashraf sb need my honest suggestions for Pakistan cricket. My best wishes for Pakistan cricket as always. Pakistan Zindabad."

The all-rounder's tenure lasted even less than two months, which was an honorary position, he had the responsibility of recommending on issues in the domestic and national circuit, appointment of selection committees and coaches, alongside planning cricket in the country.

However, things seem not to have gone down well between the management, considering they had a review meeting for the Asia Cup 2023, after which Hafeez made up his mind to quit the role.

To the unversed, the PCB Technical Committee is headed by former cricketer Misbah-ul-Haq, with Inzamam-ul-Haq being the other member who was later announced as the chief selector.

Director of cricket Mickey Arthur, head coach Grant Bradburn, batting coach Andrew Puttick, bowling coach Morne Morkel, captain Babar Azam and vice-captain Shadab Khan were all part of the meeting that discussed the team's performance. Now, it remains to be seen if PCB springs any new surprises in the World Cup squad or goes with the current side that featured in the Asia Cup.
