As predicted, Mumbai Indians named former South Africa wicketkeeper Mark Boucher as their head coach for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Boucher, whose last international assignment as South Africa head coach will be the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, succeeds the highly-successful Sri Lankan Mahela Jayawardene.
Jayawardene stepped down from his post after being promoted to a more global role within the Mumbai Indians' eco-system after they purchased franchises in ILT20 and SA 20, respectively.
Taking to the social media site Twitter, the former Sri Lanka legend shared his views on Boucher, who is an exciting prospect as a coach for the club.
"Mark, he is an exciting coach. The way he has transformed South African white ball cricket. He has been brilliant and he is also someone that we felt thinks differently and will contribute very positively to Mumbai Indians."
"Specially when we have a group of players with the skill sets that we have. Then we have a younger group that is coming through as well. It's transition that we need to manage and we feel that Mark is the best man for that,"
Coaching Credentials
Jayawardene was appointed MI coach in 2017, taking over from Australia's Ricky Ponting. Under Jayawardene, MI won its third (2017), fourth (2019), and fifth (2020) IPL titles.
Boucher, too, has an illustrious career as a coach back home in South Africa, guiding the Titans to two One-Day trophies, two T20 Challenge titles, and one four-day trophy.
