In a major development ahead of the Kerala Cricket League (KCL) 2025 season, star India wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has not been appointed as the captain of the Kochi Blue Tigers. It is important to note that his elder brother, Saly Samson, has been appointed as the captain for the upcoming season.

Sanju's Brother Appointed As Captain For Kochi Blue Tigers

Despite being the marquee signing of KCL 2025, bought for a record ₹26.80 lakh, Sanju has been appointed as the vice-captain. This move has been surprising considering Sanju's experience as a leader with Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Kerala in domestic cricket. The franchise announced the change officially, describing the appointment of Saly Samson as part of a 'new leadership vision' for the team’s second season in the T20 tournament.

This marks the first time that Sanju Samson will play under his brother’s captaincy at the senior level. Saly, who was signed for his base price of ₹75,000, has had a modest playing career marked by injuries, but the franchise expressed full confidence in his leadership capabilities.

The Kochi Blue Tigers, who finished fifth out of six teams in KCL’s inaugural season, will be hoping the new leadership formula and the reunion of the Samson brothers sparks a turnaround in fortunes when the tournament kicks. 

Sanju Samson’s Future In IPL

It is important to mention that among all this Sanju Samson has been in the limelight regarding his uncertain future with Rajasthan Royals (RR) in IPL 2026. He was retained him for ₹18 crore but endured a forgettable IPL 2025 season. Sanju struggled with injuries and inconsistency, scoring 285 runs in nine games before missing the final stages of the tournament.

According to several reports, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are actively in line to get Sanju in their team in the next season. It is also important to note that 'Yellow Army' emerge as the frontrunner to secure Sanju’s services for the IPL 2026 season. 

If a transfer takes place, it would mark a significant shakeup in the IPL landscape, especially with CSK on the lookout for a long-term leader in the post-MS Dhoni era.
