Karunaratne dedicates Sri Lanka's Test series win over Bangladesh to fellow countrymen

The Sri Lankan Test captain has dedicated his side's Test win over Bangladesh to his fellow citizens back home. Sri Lanka is currently facing an economic crisis and is reeling under internal turmoil due to a lack of food and ever-rising fuel prices.


On Friday, the Test side won the second and final Test in Dhaka comprehensively against the home side by ten wickets. Speaking in the post-match presentation, the Lankan skipper thanked his fellow citizens for supporting the side, despite the problems.


"We would like to thank the Sri Lankans back home, this win is for them, the country is going through troubled times at the moment. We have done well as a Test team over the last few years, a lot of performances and we'll need to continue in the same way," Dimuth explained.


The left-hander lauded the efforts of his fast bowlers to make sure Sri Lanka kept their 100 percent win record in Bangladesh intact.


"We knew we needed a couple of wickets to go our way (on the final day). The fast bowlers did the job for us, both in the first innings as well as the second. We do get good wickets for spinners in such conditions, they did well in patches, but I'm a bit disappointed at how they bowled. They'll have to do a lot better in the next series," Karunaratne clarified.


The first Test at Chattogram ended in a draw. Former skipper Angelo Mathews was awarded the man of the series trophy for amassing 344 runs across two Tests, averaging 172.


Wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella also expressed similar intentions to that of Karunartane.


"It's hard time for us as Sri Lankans so actually we kept it (what is happening back home) behind us as we came here to play good cricket and win the series. We want to bring home whatever we could do for them and I think we did it and it's a good positive thing for us," he told reporters.


Sri Lanka are scheduled to host Australia for a full-fledged tour comprising of 2 Tests, 5 ODIs, and 3T20Is starting on June 7.

Australian leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed, who served as the spin-bowling consultant for the number one ranked Test team during their recent trip to Pakistan, has revealed that the touring party was sympathetic towards the problem faced by common Pakistani people due to the security accorded to them. The Australian team travelled to Pakistan for the first time in 24 years. Earlier this March, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) gave Pat Cummins-led unit 'presidential-level security'. Speaking to Cricket Pakistan, Ahmed revealed that the Aussie players were well aware of the sacrifices that the common public had to make for the smooth functioning of the tour. He also lauded the PCB for the world-class arrangements they made for the touring party but urged them to create hotels close to the stadiums to avoid shelling out extra money on security. "The security was amazing. The government and PCB both spent millions of dollars to make sure the series went smoothly and they offered us presidential-level security," said Ahmed. "I heard several Australian players who talked about how the people were suffering due to their arrival because they have this kind of awareness within themselves. It will be fantastic if PCB actually carried out their plans to create hotels next to stadiums - that way they can limit the amount of money spent on a daily basis," he added. The Australian players were taken aback by the kind of support and love they received from the Pakistani fans. "The home team crowd showed immense support for the Australian players. While leaving the crowd, the fans would be chanting 'Aussie, Aussie' which was also something new for these players because they are used to hostile crowds in countries like India, West Indies, England, and South Africa," he revealed. Australia went on to script their maiden Test series win in Asia since 2011 as they beat the home side 1-0 in a high-scoring three-match affair. Pakistan, however, went on to win the ODI series against a second-string Australian team, while the tourists won the one-off T20I.
