Jos Buttler tops MS Dhoni, AB de Villiers in an elite record post Netherlands ODIs

Jos Buttler took charge in place of regular captain Eoin Morgan to lead England in their emphatic victory over the Netherlands in the third ODI. The dynamic batter scored an unbeaten 86 in a six-laden knock and steered his side to a 3-0 series win over the hosts.

Remarkably, the Lancashire cricketer also clubbed a 70-ball 162* in the first ODI, where he turbo-charged his side to an ODI world record total of 498-4. He struck 14 sixes in the innings and added another five in the final game as he ended the tour with 248 runs and a 'Player of the Series' award.

After his latest fireworks at Amstelveen's VRA Cricket Ground, the English wicketkeeper-batsman is now the recipient of an elite ODI record, thus eclipsing previous holder and former Indian captain MS Dhoni.

The 31-year-old struck 19 sixes across the two innings he played against the Netherlands in the recently-concluded series. He now holds the record of hitting most sixes by a wicketkeeper-batsman in a single ODI series, breaking MS Dhoni's 17-year-old milestone against a visiting Sri Lankan team.

Dhoni slammed 17 sixes in a seven-match ODI competition against Marvan Atapattu's Sri Lanka in 2005. Ten of those sixes came in a single innings when he registered his highest ODI score of 183*.

Former South African captain AB de Villiers is now third on the list with 16 sixes against West Indies in a home ODI series before the 2015 World Cup.

In one of the matches, the right-hander bashed 149 off just 44 balls, an innings that featured all 16 of his sixes.

Jos Buttler's ODI tally now stands at 4,120 runs from 151 ODIs, featuring 144 sixes. The 2019 World Cup winner has 10 tons and 21 half-centuries in his register and is now expected to feature in England's home series against India in July.
