Jos Buttler challenges England to continue with aggressive approach in white-ball cricket

England's new white-ball captain Jos Buttler wants his team to play an aggressive brand of cricket without thinking about failures.

After serving the white-ball team as the vice-captain, Buttler took over as England’s captain after Eoin Morgan announced his retirement from international cricket owing to fitness concerns and poor form.

Buttler is all set for his first assignment as the full-time captain against India with the three T20Is starting July 7.

Buttler wants to play the Morgan way

Speaking to the media on the eve of the first T20I, Buttler insisted that even after Morgan's retirement, nothing will change and his team will continue to play a positive and aggressive brand of white-ball cricket.

“There's not much at the moment that needs changing. I see the game in exactly the same way as Eoin (Morgan)," said Jos Buttler while talking to the reporters.

“I want us to play in exactly the same fashion – to be really positive, really aggressive, and not afraid of failure," the newly appointed skipper said.

The explosive batter asserted that there's clarity on how England wants to play in limited-overs cricket and challenges his teammates to take their game to new levels.

“There’s a really clear way we want to play our cricket and I think that will outlast me and everyone. It will be much of the same and, if anything, can we take that to new levels? That’s what we’ll always be challenging ourselves on. A big part of the team is not to set boundaries and not to have limitations.

There’s big expectations on the group now that that’s where we believe we’re good enough to be. Absolutely we deserve that through all the hard work we’ve put in," added Buttler.

After taking the role of captaincy as Morgan's successor, Buttler said his full focus is on the job at hand and he's not at all thinking about his return in the longest version of the game.

"Being made captain of this team in T20s and ODIs needs full focus and a lot of energy. That’s where all my focus is at the minute,” he added.

Buttler has been in the prime of his life with the bat in the last few months. After a successful IPL 2022 where he won the Orange Cap award for finishing the tournament as the highest run-getter with 863 runs from 17 matches, he followed it up with a whirlwind century off just 47 balls against the Netherlands last month.

He's likely to open the innings with Jason Roy for England when they take on the visiting Indian team for the first T20I in Southampton on Thursday (July 7).
